The smart groups are stored in ~/Library/Application Support/DEVONthink/SmartGroups.plist. If need be, you can perhaps restore an older version from a backup. While DT is not running.
That is just an idea of mine; I have no idea if DEVONtechnologies would sign off on that. In any case, you’ll restore an older version of your smart groups, overwriting anything you did since the backup…
Of course, this is not very elegant. OTOH, I don’t see a better solution to retrieve an accidentally deleted smart group – they are not moved to the trash from where you could reinstate them.
I expressed myself badly. I have no problem creating new global SmartGroups in DT, but in DTTG, since you can’t duplicate an existing one, or create (or at least I haven’t found the way), nor synchronize with DT, what you delete has disappeared forever, and that’s what happened to me with the recently opened one. I have modified the recently edited one to be the previous one, but I would like to recover the deletion or create a new one. They will end up adding it if it is not there, or they will explain to us how to do it.
BTW, recreate originals in DT could be as easy as make a new DT installation in a new user account and then export them.
I would be really happy if smart groups would work with full functionality on my iPad including sync because I love to use my iPad for all this organisational staff and smart groups are really helpful for this. Also running through my notes and taking new notes using my iPad would be absolute my favourite workflow because I love to use my pencil instead of my keyboard. Using the iPad with screens to access Devonthink on my Mac is possible of course, but not comfortable.
Conduct a search that looks in all databases. Save it and it becomes a global smart group. But, agreed, there should be a menu command in the … > Add submenu.
