I’m using DTTG4 on my iPad for reading PDFs, often several books/documents in parallel.
I know DTTG is generally supposed to remember the last reading position, but in my case the PDF sometimes opens at a different location after I close the iPad/app. I’m not really looking to troubleshoot that behavior here.
Instead, is there a quick way to bookmark the exact page or reading position before I stop reading, so I can reliably jump back to it later?
Ideally I’m looking for something very lightweight — basically a “save my place here” function that works well when switching between several PDFs.
I’ve reported this problem a long time ago. I think in a ticket, not on the forum. This has persisted across v3 and v4 for many years. It always happens when I need to bring another app to the front. The amount of page-miss seems unpredictable. I have to recall some details. Vaguely remember that it is particularly pervasive in many-page pdfs. Just tried it on a 1000 page-ish pdf. I was looking at page 279, then brought Safari to the front, and upon returning to DTTG, I found myself on page 288. If I first switch to another document in DT, then to another app, then back to DT, and finally back to the document of interest, page location is preserved. So it seems that the page-state is not properly recorded by DT when it is put straight into the background.
I tried hard to identify some systematics. Maybe confusing logical and true page numbers. But no luck.
In the meantime, I started to put the stamp “completed” at the location where I finish a (proof)reading session. I use the page thumbnail view in “annotated” mode to quickly identify that location when I return.
I’m currently trying to see if there is a pattern, so I can record a video from my iPad to report that properly. But so far the issue seem to be rather random… similar to what you described: I open a (large) pdf document, navigate to another document or app, reopen the pdf — and the page is either correct or not.
I’ve been informally testing this out again last night, and I can say that the whole business of returning to the same page after switching to another app (or just the desktop) is complex and highly variable. I’m going to report some of it piecemeal here. Some of it might have to do with the fact that I’m on a beta, 18311 on iPadOS 26.6.1 on iPadPro M5, but as I said earlier, the general issue has been persistent since the DTTG 3 days.
First issue: This one happens while staying inside DTTG, and inside the same document.
go to certain page A in continuous scroll mode (CSM)
switch to “scroll by page” mode (i.e. CSM disabled) and move on to another page B
alternatively go into thumnail view and go to page B
while on page B, switch to CSM mode, and DTTG jumps back to displaying page A
this is almost always reproducible and seems to happen in pdfs of all kinds of page length.
It should be straightforward for others to reproduce this – or not.
Edit: I should add that pages A and B can be arbitrarily far away from each other, say 100 pages. So this is not an issue of defining the exact page location in CSM, when two or even 3 pages might be on display simultaneously.
