Easy 1-2-3 upgrade to DEVONthink 4 from 3

I’d like quick-and-easy 1-2-3 steps to upgrade from DEVONthink Pro 3 to DEVONthink Pro 4. I’ve paid for the extension and have downloaded the new app, though I haven’t installed it yet. I have two databases, and I have DEVONthink Pro 3 installed on two Macs. The two databases sync between my two Macs.

So, how do I do the upgrade? Should I install the new app on both computers, then delete the app for DEVONthink Pro 3 from both computers? I saw a mention here that I should close Safari so that after installation and a restart of Safari the extension in that app will point to new version 4; is that correct?

One of my most important uses of DEVONthink Pro 3 is to scan documents using my ScanSnap 1600. A few years ago DEVONthink customer support helped me set an earlier ScanSnap (a 1500) so that I can select the scan-to-DEVONthink option on my scanner and docs immediately go into my main DEVONthink database. Will that “trick” still work? Or will I have to change something to make it work?

Any other suggestions from a very basic perspective?

take a screenshot of all your settings in settings

Copy all folders in “Open Scripts Folder”
delete DEVONthink 3
download DEVONthink 4

DONE

This is incorrect. DEVONthink 4 has different and updated scripts made for it. You should only move your own custom scripts.

Thats just in case he has custom scripts and for reference too.
he doest need to download all folders just custom ones

There’s nothing complicated involved. In fact, it’s really no different than moving from 2 to 3 was.

  1. Make sure you have downloaded and installed the most recent version: 4.0.2.
  2. Launch DEVONthink 4 on each Mac.
  3. Open the databases you want to open, just as you would in 3.x.
  4. Afterwards, delete the DEVONthink 3 application. Do not run an uninstaller application and yes ideally, Safari should be quit first.
  5. Reboot the Mac, for good measure.

Regarding the ScanSnap, yes you will need to edit your scanning profile to point the Send to command to DEVONthink 4.

Anything special I need to do to get local sync via Bonjour with version 4 working? Bonjour shows “Incoming Connections: Available” in Sync settings for version 3, but if I shutdown version 3, restart Mac, and startup version 4, I get “Incoming Connections: None”. Some settings somewhere in the Bonjour world that need to be changed? Do I need to uninstall version 3? I was keeping both versions until I could verify that everything had been moved over properly on the Mac and iPhone since both were just upgraded from version 3 to 4.

Everything seems fine with opening my databases on the Mac with either version 3 or 4. Only issue is this local sync.

You should not have version 3 and 4 available on the same account, on the same Mac. Delete the DEVONthink 3 application and reboot the Mac. Do NOT run an uninstaller application. You should also read the Getting Started > First and Last Steps section of the built-in Help and manual regarding macOS privacy options.

MacOS Privacy Options was the problem. Settings → Privacy & Security → Local Network. Had to turn on DEVONthink. Thanks.

You’re welcome.
Do note, Apple’s OS updates can disable such options so after updating point releases, it’s not a bad idea to check those things.

As was the problem of two versions of DEVONthink … hope you fixed that also.

how to backup all the database with one click, there was an option to backup all database in dt3 and I can’t seem to find it on dtp4.

In my DEVONthink4, in the Scripts → Export there is “Daily Backup Archives” script. I understand this delivered as part of DEVONthink4. This what you are looking for? See page 35 of DEVONthink Manual.
