I had no luck in finding an easy way to see the number of words in a markdown file. Is there some trick to get this information provided e.g. in the main inspector?
It’s already visible in the Navigation and Editing bar over the view/edit pane.
Here there are 66 paragraphs, 313 words, and 2004 characters.

You’re welcome. Note there is also a Word Count column that can be shown in the item list in List view.
