Hello
I have taken the plunge, bought DEVONthink Pro and am migrating from Evernote. At the moment I am just testing a few things out before importing everything to avoid making the wrong decisions early on.
My Query
In my database if I create a Group called “Receipts” in order to accept the import of an Evernote notebook (.enex file) called for example “Receipts.enex” that is straightforward and what I end up with inside the Receipts Group are multiple new Groups each one containing a receipt (.pdf) and another file containing any text that might have been associated with that receipt. So I now have multiple Groups sitting inside the Receipt Group.
When, in the future, I come to add a new receipt is it intended that I should create a new Group for each receipt, or just drop the new .pdf (not in it’s own group) of the receipt into the Receipts group?
I ask this because ideally I want to use the Classify feature to speed my filing of documents into groups and I can’t classify a Group, only a single item or several items.
It seems that if I just add the scans into the Receipts group without making them into standalone groups (one group per receipt) I will end up with recent/new receipts being filed differently when compared with all the hundreds of older receipts in there, each of which now sits in it’s own group, generated during the .enex import.
I’d appreciate any guidance those with lots of experience can share.
Many thanks,

Yes, that is expected and how the exported data from Evernote comes through. (They were never embedded in your note in Evernote. It just looked like they were.)

Do what makes sense to you. We don’t dictate how you file you future imports.
For better classification, avoid redundant, deeply nested structures. Shallower topical groups are easier for our AI to classify into.
Thank you. What has surprised me a bit is that:
- If the original Evernote Note had just a PDF or JPG in it what DEVONthink creates when it imports the .enex is a Group containing two items, a PDF and another one containing just a link to the PDF.
- If the original Evernote Note contained an image of a receipt AND a short bit of text then after import DEVONthink does not generate a Group, just an item, with the text at the top.
I’ve attached a couple of images to show what I mean. The first image is a screenshot of the note in Evernote. The second image is a screenshot of the item in DEVONthink, as you see the text from the Evernote note has been included at the top and this was just a single item generated, no containing group.
Maybe it depends whether the original scanned images was a PDfFor a JPEG, I’ve no idea but it seems strange that they seem to be handled differently.
Thank you,

In DEVONthink, hold the Option key and select Help > Report Bug. Attach the formatted note from DEVONthink.
Hi
Hope you received what you require. It got a bit confusing as the Apple Mail app opened and I never use that.

I just responded. We can talk there.
