I’d like to be able to exclude tags from the tags suggestion, similar to how I can exclude groups from classification. Ideally this should exclude the tag from the suggested tags pane and automations (assign existing tags the various scripts, etc and everywhere tags are auto suggested).
I use tags for various purposes. To assign types to records (for references I might tag an item as a precedent, an article, a book chapter), to control whether a record has been processed by a smart rule so that the smart rule doesn’t run over the same record twice. Most of these tags are hierarchical (eg type reference sub type article sub sub type peer reviewed article vs pre print etc)
I also use lots of tags for topics.
The most used tags are these meta tags, as they can be easily applied automatically, and so so most records have them. Being hierarchical, this also means that every tag in these hierarchies are applied too.
This makes it so that most of the suggestions are for these types of tags when the useful suggestions are the topical tags. This also means that I can’t use any of the automatic suggestions, as they’re mostly inappropriate (eg assigning a record a tag that controls whether it’s been processed by a smart rule).
I could use custom metadata to control the smart rules, but this would require me to change lots os scripts and smart rules I currently rely on. This could decrease the number of “meta” tags applied and thus improve the suggestions.
But metadata would not really work for me for record type as I rely on tags for filtering the item list for my workflow (eg show only boom chapters about a certain topic, or show only my notes). AFAICT I can’t filter by custom metadata values.
It’s unclear how you are using the term “filter” here. Are you talking about the Tags filter or something else?

Having to change scripts and smart rules shouldn’t be the prohibiting factor. Whether another approach is better or not should lead your decision. Continuing to use a familar but inefficient system is not a win if another option is superior. And you don’t have to change everything. You could easily test a smaller subset along side what you’re currently using to see how it feels.
Sorry I meant the filter available in the sidebar (indexed vs imported items, dates, geolocation and especially the tag filter). I want to be able to filter items in the item list, without resorting to search or smart groups, so that I can keep the item list hierarchy (groups) intact but choose what is shown.
I use groups in a similar fashion as outline items. All my databases have inherit group tags with them. So something like this:
Civil law (tagged civil law)
Civil liability (civil liability)
note one (tagged note inherits civil law and civil liabilty)
book one tagged ref/book
precedent one (tagged ref/precedent/type of case, court, author,)
damages (tagged damages)
note 2 (tagged note, inherits civil law/liability and damages)
Using the tags filter I can easily find all precedents from court such and such that deal with civil liability and damages, or only show notes, etc.
This also means that if I’m dealing with some other topic/branch of the tree, if I replicate a note or reference to it, the record will inherit all pertinent tags very easily (ie tags from both locations). But this also means the outline can get very many items especially in a research heavy session. Bein able to filter the items in place with tags is very helpful to focus what is shown in the outline. This can only be done with tags and very easily.
The tag cloud filter is really a killer feature of DT for me. But tag suggestions are “polluted” by the meta tags.
