Experience with Typing Mind

I am currently paying an OpenAI subscription, using the their app. I have not yet ventured into API access.

Typing Mind is a frontend to LLMs, that offer a 50% sale this week. Typing Mind appears to be popular and I wonder whether someone here can recommend Typing Mind or recommend something else.

I understand that DT is something similar, also providing a general gateway to LLMs. I currently do not foresee a particular need for using AI models with the content of my databases. My use is currently mostly general purpose web search. If someone can compare DTs AI gateway to something like Typing Mind, I would appreciate any thoughts and tips you may have.

That’s not quite correct. While it’s possible to to generalized Internet searches with the Chat assistant in DEVONthink, it is implemented to complement its core functionality with a mind toward data safety and privacy. It is not intended as an AI internet search tool. The bespoke apps and web chat interfaces already handle those tasks for people.

I did not expect DT to do the job as comprehensively as Typing Mind, but I anticipated that someone might then say “DT can do it” I would be interested what the experience with those dedicated gateway apps is. Everyone in my circles appears to be using the apps with subscription model.

I use both - they are very different and each has its use in certain cases.

Devonthink is first and foremost about documents and privacy. It does a terrific job letting you query those documents with AI - but there are some limitations to assure data security and because document management is its prime directive and focus.

Typing Mind is much more configurable with regard to accessing AI. You can explore the latest/greatest LLMs the day they come out and you can add all sorts of custom tools and other features that DT does not permit. With that comes a safety issue - you are more responsible for doing things safely.

Moreover while TypingMind lets you upload documents, it is not a document repository. Therefore if you have to pick only one, it would be Devonthink because Devonthink has perhaps 50% of the AI features of TypingMind, but TypingMind has perhaps 1% of the document management features of Devonthink.
