Scenario:
Months ago I created database (call it “Shirley.dtbase2”) in a folder on my Mac in DTPO and synced it successfully over to DTM. Yesterday, while “Shirley” was closed, and forgetting I’d already created Shirley, I created another database through DTPO with the name “Shirley” (and presumably the filename “Shirley.dtbase2,” and presumably in the same folder).
I assume what happened was that the New Shirley overwrote the Old Shirley in the Mac folder, as there is only one Shirley and it is the new one.
However, Old Shirley lives on, happy and healthy, in DTM and in my Dropbox sync store. On my iPhone, I can see two databases named Shirley. Old Shirley appears to have all her files intact. She is a ghost in the machine.
Query:
How can I export the contents of Old Shirley such that I could import them into New Shirley, and then retire Old Shirley and forget this mess?
Import old Shirley from the Dropbox Sync location. Then do move the files from the old to the new via this method…
In order to move large numbers of files between databases, it is always best to use File > Export > Files and Folders to a newly created folder in your Home Directory. i[/i]
- Select the records to move in the source database.
- Choose File > Export > Files and Folders and choose a newly created folder on your Desktop. This is important as it keeps any ungrouped files from being mixed in with other files accidentally.
- After the export is finished, switch to the destination database and choose File > Import > Files and Folders. Select the contents of the folder from Step 2, not the folder itself.
This should maintain the metadata for the files. When the process is finished i[/i], I would do a Tools > Verify & Repair or a Tools > Rebuild Database to ensure the new database’s integrity.
This worked, but not for the expected reasons. Turns out Old Shirley was actually named Something Else but its name in the properties pane had changed to Shirley. So it was there after all.
Many thanks for your quick response.
No problem. Glad it’s all worked out now. Cheers!
