Yes, it is annoying. On my machine sometimes the Safari extension works and sometimes it doesn’t. But the Sorter always works. Here are my settings for the Sorter. (Instead of clicking Save when the Sorter appears, press CMD-S 
) When your muscle memory becomes strong enough you can set Appearance as None if you like.
