Hi everyone,
I have DV3 running on an iMac and on a MBP. This is only happening on the iMac.
It’s quite simple: if I remove or add a Favorite, then quit/restart DV, it reverts the changes. I’m stuck with the ones I have had for months and new ones do not appear.
Works as expected on the MBP. Suggestions to troubleshoot are very welcome as it must be something to do with local settings on the iMac. I think this has been the case for ages but I had kept thinking I must have forgotten to action changes rather than realising they had reverted in due course.
iMac is running 15.1.1; DV 3.9.8
(This iMac has inherited via TM everything from a 2020 Mac mini which had a clean install; the MBP had a clean install a couple of years ago).
- Is the iMac a new installation?
- Does DEVONthink have Full Disk Access in System Settings > Privacy & Security?
PS: The current version of macOS Sequoia is 15.2. You should keep up to date with operating system point releases.
- new installation (answered above, no, one previous machine)
- it does now, but that didn’t fix the issue
PS on updates, it’s either keep exactly up to date, or wait to hear about bugs;) I alternate between them. No time currently to shut down for the update. The MBP is still on 14.5, just to make it worse!
Is there a crossed pencil to the right of the Inbox’s name in the Globals section of the Navigate sidebar?
Do you have read/write permissions for the files in the folder ~/Library/Application Support/DEVONthink 3/
, e.g. Favorites.plist
and SmartGroups.plist
?

what’s the best way to tell?
PS I opened Favorites.plist in BBEdit and hit the space bar, and it confirmed I don’t have permission. So I guess that’s a no. But I’m loathe to mess with permissions at this level without simple instructions;)
I had already opened that so it’s been a couple of minutes, and so far it’s stuck on ‘fetching…’
I note that Reminders has me instantly as read and write, while SmartGroups is also stuck on ‘fetching’. So (nicely done) this is apparently about the permissions in there. I can run Disk Utility later tonight or manually change them to match Reminders’ settings (on your advice!)
Yep. That’s not a DEVONtech issue, but an Apple one. It’s also not unheard of when using Migration Assistant or Time Machine.
What is shown for the whole DEVONthink 3 directory?
I would make sure our directory is set with your user to Read & Write and click the More Options (…) button and Apply to enclosed items. Then check the problematic files again to see if the permissions updated.

That looks healthy: I can read and write, and ‘staff’ and ‘everyone’ can both read.
While I realise this is an Apple issue, I’d appreciate whether I should (or should not) copy permissions to enclosed items from that Info window (I assume you know the effects of this on the DV 3 folder!)
I see you recommended copying. Will do that. Thanks for the prompt and efficient help.
If changing your account to Read Only and back to Read & Write on the directory, applying the permissions to enclosed item doesn’t resolve the issue, I would remove the Fetching one and explicitly add your user account to the specific problematic files.
You’re welcome.

All looking good now, Favorites are behaving, and I’ll check the individual items. Much appreciated.
