So a couple of months into the betas, and before all the new features become so familiar that we forget what life was like without them, what are people’s favourite improvements in v4 aside from the AI stuff (which would need its own version of this discussion)? I suspect for each user it’ll be a different mix of quite small things and absolutely game-changingly huge ones. My own current top three:
DT Server enhanced UI (specifically, the more DT-like interface with collapsible sidebar items and new View pane with slidable View/Preview divider). Amazing work from @aedwards here.
Table of contents editor for PDFs. I use this all the time now; it always felt like the one thing DT was missing for working with PDFs, and now it isn’t.
Floating Annotations popover (via Tools => Get Info, click Annotations tab, and tear the popover off at the triangle). Permanently in view, and instantly switches to display the Annotation file of whatever file is currently selected, regardless of what tab is open in the Inspector. Effectively the compact second Inspector I never knew I needed.
Obviously there’s so much more that it feels invidious even to single particular features out in this way, but I’d still be interested to see others’ nominations – not least as a feature-discovery resource.
I love the new Help Viewer @cgrunenberg created, with or without the AI-driven Help assistant. It fixes things Apple has been breaking for several years. And yes, I’m a bit biased perhaps
Absolutely, the new Help viewer is a thing of beauty. I am using it all the time. Doing Help is tough, not for lazy people. Laurels for those who carry this torch.
⭡⭡This!⭡⭡ I’d already forgotten about that one. Being able to add the Today smart group to the Favourites has been one of the things I now couldn’t do without. (Actually I couldn’t do without it in DT3 either, which was why I was so excited with the teaser that it was finally coming.)
