Hi, everyone! I was having an issue moving a group to another database and I realized there was an issue of missing files (I don’t know why). So I ran “Verify & Repair Database” and ended up of a new group named “Orphaned Files” and lots of “ghost” files into the database like this:
I can see that a lot of missing files, maybe all, are in the Orphaned Files group. So my question is, what is the recommended thing to do here? Manually move the files from Orphaned Files into the right place that I can see in the folder/group structure and then delete the related “ghost” file?
I checked the forum and help files but I’m not confident about the best thing to do here.
@BLUEFROG no crash, the move actually didn’t happen. I got a report on the log saying “missing file” and nothing was moved. I checked some files, couldn’t open them and as something was clearly wrong I ran “Verify & Repair” database and got to where I am now. Lots of missing files and that orphaned group of files. PS: DEVONThink closed the wrong way or crashed before but not now when I was doing this.
I’ll report as you asked!
@chrillek I understood that @BLUEFROG was asking if I was indexing or importing documents, both features to bring files from outside into DEVONThink and I’m not. Did I miss something? As to what I’m referring to: My issue started when trying to “moving a group to another database” and as I couldn’t and repaired the database, as something was clearly wrong, my question is what is the best thing to do since I now have a group of orphaned files and a lot of missing ones that, as far as I can tell, looks like they match.
Call me very curious, but if not importing or indexing, then how are files getting into the DEVONthink database? Using the file creation features of DEVONthink (the editor)?
If the question is how did I get files into this database in the first place, a looooong time ago I probably dropped a folder from Finder into this DEVONThink database (Importing). And I never indexed a folder. Right now I was not doing any of those when I had the issue, I was just trying to move a group from one database into another, not bring files outside DEVONThink into it.
In general, imported and indexed data might produce different problems. Regardless of when they were imported or indexed. That’s why @BLUEFROG asked, I suppose.
