How do I get a Devonthink without AI?

I don’t want AI. I don’t use it, and I don’t want it.

It looks like I will get AI in DT4, and there is no way to turn it off, or know what information is being shared with the AI agents/models that are connected to it. Which I am super unhappy about.

Devonthink has been so fantastic to work with – I think I’ve had it for over 5 years.

I don’t know what I will do without it. Will DT3 continue to function? Because until there is a way to use it without AI, I’m not upgrading.

Simply don’t use the AI functions; don’t turn them on

Not sure why you think that but integration with LLMs (“AI”) isn’t enabled by default in DT4. If you don’t want to turn it on, then don’t. The software works fine without it.

I haven’t enabled it, I’m sure many others haven’t either.

Just for info though, there’s plenty of info available about what is shared with a model if you choose to enable it, and it’s not your whole database.

Hm, an entomologist perchance?

lol which one of us?

But close I guess, since I’m an ecologist (I can’t work out how you guessed that though :joy:)

Nope, I’m talking about “membracid”

However, nice to know you’re an ecologist (same here, long time ago)

If you do not enter an LLM API key, AI features will not be enabled. You can use DTP4 without sharing data with any AI service. Alternatively, you can use it with a local AI if your computer has sufficient processing power.

I also am not sure where you got this idea but those chiming in here are spot-on. Just as many things are optional in DEVONthink – sync, automation, encrypted databases, etc. – access to external AI is also optional. It requires the individual to not only decide to use it but also to set it up. This has been discussed on these forums as well as in the built-in Help and manual, specifically the Getting Started > AI Explained section.

There’s AI, and then there’s AI with lasers on its head.

Devonthink has had internal AI for many years. It profiles (locally, no privacy leak) the contents of groups for suggesting where incoming files should go, and it does great fuzzy searching. That kind of AI is cool in my book. The other kind, no thank you.

Fortunately, if you don’t configure DT to use the evil kind of AI your system isn’t tainted by it.

Fear not!

This is great to hear!! It isn’t clear to me from what I’ve read that the AI can be turned off. I am very happy to be wrong
