I apologize for asking this question because since I’ve looked all around for an answer, I suppose it might be a dumb one to ask. Nevertheless, I have installed DT3 and appreciate the fact that the developers of this app are continually working to improve its performance (things that are not visibly obvious, but nonetheless are improvements), and I’d like to ‘move up’ to the latest and greatest. However, being a geezer now who is set in his ways, I don’t want to use the new ‘dark mode’ interface. That ‘old time religion’ is good enough for me. This is my only (or so far, anyway) reason for not wanting to upgrade. Hence, is there a way to ‘turn off’ the dark mode interface? Thank you for you understanding.
DEVONthink honors the system setting for light and dark mode color schemes.
How do I not make DT3 ‘dark mode’? I’m running under OS 10.14.6.
Okay, I just realized that I was in ‘dark mode’ under the system prefs! Sorry to have wasted people’s time, but thank you for your reply to make me investigate and realize this.
No worries or wasted time. It’s why we are here
Hello-
I’m hoping you will add the ability to disable Dark Mode in an update of DEVONthink. I suffer from Glaucoma and the eyedrops I use to control the pressure makes my eyes sensitive to light. As a result, I welcome Dark Mode in the Finder, but frequently disable it in other programs when I am writing or reading text.
In addition, when I create a new RTF document in DEVONthink the default is Dark Mode, even though I’ve changed my default editing preferences background to gray. Only Plain Text documents follow my default preferences—but I do not use plain text.
Thank you.
Welcome @jchris
We have some changes that maybe useful coming. Thanks for your patience and understanding.
Open terminal, paste the command below, hit enter and restart DEVONthink.
defaults write com.devon-technologies.think3 NSRequiresAquaSystemAppearance yes
And to revert back to following system preferences:
defaults delete com.devon-technologies.think3 NSRequiresAquaSystemAppearance
Can the ability to turn off dark mode for documents be extended to other file types?
In particular, email documents?
Welcome @brandt
This isn’t possible by any user-defined settings but if you use Vieew > Document Display > Text Alternative, the plain text view will not be in dark mode.
You can also choose this as the default by enabling Preferences > Email > Messages > Use alternative view.
Thank you.
This is a good workaround for now. I appreciate the ability to turn off dark mode in documents and would love to see this extended to all-- feature request.
In the interim, is there a way see PDF’s inline using the alternative view? They only appear as icons which need to be double-clicked and viewed in a separate window.
You’re welcome

I’m not sure what you’re referring to here. Perhaps a screen capture could help.
To clarify, when I use ‘alternative view’ for viewing .eml files, PDF’s show up only as icons:
I was curious if there was a way to view PDF’s ‘inline’-- meaning to show a preview of the PDF rather than the generic icon.
I am assuming you are referring to being attached in an RTF file.
That’s controlled by Preferences > Editing > General: Display PDF attachments of rich texts.
I am referring to .eml files not RTF.
Ahh… need to put my glasses back on.
We don’t control that. We display what Apple’s QuickLook view displays.
The alternate email view uses actually this setting too.
Brilliant! Thank you very much,. No more dark mode, Yippee!
That worked perfectly, thanks!
