I use full download (20GB)
Storage space isn’t an issue and I want my data available when there’s no internet access
How do you transfer Apple Notes to DevonThink?
I really like how Apple Notes is embedded into iPadOS.
Also “embedded” into MacOS with notes available on all devices
Agreed.
I wish there would be a way to integrate DT3 with Apple Notes!
You can. Just write your note in Apple Notes and send a copy to DTTG in any format that you want.
By the way, I use DTTG to capture websites and pdfs that I want to read later. I write some notes in DTTG when needed.
All relevant technical pdfs go to Paperpile, my reference manager.
I read my technical pdfs in Paperpile because it has an outstanding pdf reader for iPad. Then, when on my computer, I export my highlights and notes to DT3.
I use DTTG for reading non-technical pdfs. It has everything that I need.
OMG so easy that I wasn’t aware of it!
Thank you! You saved me hours of copy/paste…
I’ve played with using DT as a read-later service. But saving to Instapaper is so easy!
OTOH, using DT would eliminate a subscription.
Life in the 21st Century. Choices. I prefer Reeder (as much as I rely on DEVONthink).
As described by @Silva I just use the share button on Notes if I just want a carbon copy. Usually though, I process my notes actively.
DTTG is my external brain. I keep all my files downloaded to my iPad (it has enough memory - and having more data on it does not make it any heavier)
Some examples of use:
I store user manuals in pdf — so useful for finding our & restoring the arcane settings on the dishwasher & the microwave after a power cut.
I take screenshots of my hobby magazine on the iPad. I run a shortcut to crop the pages, make a pdf and apply tags and dump into DTTG.
On synch to DT3 on my iMac, the tags ensure proper placement of the articles into groups for later reference.
Scanning all my receipts into DT3 and hence into DTTG has saved my bacon on many occasions!
I scan paper receipts using the iPad camera and a scanner app; hence DTTG > DT3
Email receipts are auto imported using an email folder (Devonthink) and an applescript
Out of interest, do you save everything into one database and index using tags or do you have multiple databases?
I started out using 1 (enormous … 8GB) database and groups. The database grew like Topsy.
All my eggs in 1 basket.
Multiple databases now — it just makes sense eg house, garden & manuals are separate databases.
I use a mix of sensible groups and sub groups and tags. Redundancy in search terms is vital as labelling and tagging of items will evolve over the years.
You don’t want to have to use a search phrase that has to be exact and precise (like the commands in text adventure games).
There is no point in storing data if you can’t find it when you need it.
I have multiple databases.
Input is stuff from elsewhere to me — articles, web pages, etc
Output is stuff I’ve written, ideas, journal and so on.
Bureaucracy is stuff I don’t really want to save, but need to, like taxes.
Lifestream is a kind of catch all for everything else.
I also have a Manuals DB just for PDF manuals of everything I own, just because that one gets huge.
The great thing is I can still search across them all.
Great question … I run my personal and professional life with DEVONthink on my Mac, but can’t figure out a way to make DTTG work. Synching isn’t foolproof, and the interface is confusing for all the reasons you mention. What are the use cases that make it valuable?
Please add details about the problem with synching
What are the use cases that make it valuable?
My mobile device is an iPad
While away from my Mac desktop,
DTTG gives me access to my notes; access to add new notes
Use case; entering businesses yesterday I had to show my vaccination QR code.
(stored in Devonthink with a shortcut on my home screen)
I use Devonthink (on the Mac and also on the IOS devices) only to manage PDFs, to find them quickly in case of warranty or for the tax declaration. Sync by Webdav to Nextcloud. I would like to save personal notes, but I don’t have the history of changes. Therefore I use Git/Markdown documents or Apple Notes. For news consumption I use Nextcloud RSS (with Fiery Feeds as frontend) and Wallabag, so I don’t use the Devonthink RSS feature.
Last night I created a database for myself to search a large set of magazines by keyword. So again PDF.
When you do this how does it save the file? Do you just have maybe 100+ tiny notes on your DT? I feel a bit funny about that (don’t know why) so I haven’t done it yet. I have over 200 little notes in Apple Notes, and have only moved over things that became more than a paragraph. (A lot of my Apple Notes are just a couple of sentences with a useful citation I didn’t want to lose, a quote I needed, etc.) I don’t like the alternative of making one giant file to catch them all either, hence why they’re still in Apple Notes!
You define where DT will save the file. It seems the default is the DT general inbox.
I see your point. However, some people collect all notes (long and short) in DT and process them later. Some notes will be kept; others will be discarded. It is a suitable workflow for people who want to have all notes in one app.
Finally, I do not use Apple Notes for note-taking (I use DT ad DTTG). I just said that it is possible to export notes from Apple Notes to DT and DTTG.

Isn’t this a contrary statement?
