How to change the background color of text

I am using a rich text file and want to change the background color of the text. Because

sometimes when I copy some text to dt, it comes with some background colors, and I don’t want those, but I don’t know how to remove them.

Select the text, then select Format > Show Format Bar (or Shift-Command-F). Click the background color button and choose the No Fill option – clear with a red slash in it…

Also, when you paste into a document, use Edit > Paste & Match Style (or Shift-Option-Command-V) to have it match the font settings at the current location in the document.
