How to index an external drive properly

Hey guys,

Hey there! I’m having a bit of a challenge with my project and I could really use your help. I’m using DT 4 on my Mac, and I’ve got a bunch of external drives.

I’m hoping to create an index of my files of each external drive so that I can search for them on my Mac without having to connect them to the computer. If I find a file that I’m looking for, I can just connect the drive and access it.

I’m also hoping to be able to see if there are any duplicates that might be on different drives.

Is it possible to do this? If so, how can I go about it? I’ve tried reading the manual, but I haven’t been able to find anything that seems to help.

Thanks a bunch for your help!

How much data (number of bytes & number of files) do these drives contain?

They contain around 1-4 TB.

And what kind of files? Depending on the type (e.g. only plain text or Markdown) this might be too much.

Those are al kinds of files, a lot of text though. As far as I read in the forum now, it seems, like DT ist not the best choice for my requirements. I just switched to NeoFinder. This app seems to be more suitable. Quite a pity, that DT is not offering some functionality like that app. I really love DT, but sometimes it is still too limited.

DEVONthink isn’t attempting to be a Finder replacement, nor is it attempting to be an asset manager.

It appears you’ve found the optimal app for your requirements.
