How to set default app for email

I’m using Postbox as my email client. Within Apple’s MAIL app, I’ve set Postbox as my default. Running DTPO 2.0pb5, Mac OS 10.5.7.

I’ve imported a lot of mail from Apple mail (Even though I don’t typically use Apple Mail, I use it to grab mail from all my IMAP accounts when it’s time to import them into DTPO). That works fine.

Within DTPO, I do a search and retrieve a message…can’t seem to get the attachments. I click on the “Open in External Application” icon in the upper left of the window and Apple’s MAIL launches, not Postbox. I can then get to the attached spreadsheet, for example.

If I click on the “Launch URL” icon while looking at the same message, Postbox launches.

Should I assume from this behavior that since I imported the mail from Apple mail, DTPO has tied that app to the data (rather than just treating it as a piece of generic email)?

So, after all that blather, here’s my questions:

  1. Is there a way within DTPO to look at attachments to messages I’ve imported?
  2. If not, is there a way to force use of a program other than Apple’s mail for looking at the messages.

At this time, attachments in any filetype that supports these are not indexed in the database. We hope to do that in a future release.

You will have to set the default application for “eml” files in the Finder. You can do that by showing a message in the Finder, then show the Info panel and select Postbox as the default application.

Thanks. Just to close out the thread. I followed your advice and then found that Postbox couldn’t handle opening an .eml file. Odd since Thunderbird can do that (and they supposedly share the same code base). Oh well, set the “open all like this” for .eml back to Mail.app.
