Identifying searchable pdfs and the ocr process

Is there a way to tell whether a pdf is searchable or not, i.e., other than by invoking the ocr process?

Also, yesterday when I ran the ocr process on a document a window displaying progress of the process opened up. That is not happening today. With large documents I can tell whether anything is happening or not.

Is there a way to get the progress window to be displayed again?

Command-Control-A or Window > Activity is the “progress window”.
