In-line citations

Using AI for legal and academic workflows, where efficient verification is everything, I would like an option for in-line citations. In principle, think of NotebookLM; better implementations are Coral and Anara (and a few other academia-focussed AI products).

In DEVONthink, a citation must be chased to the source via a footnote, which causes you to lose place in a longer document.

On the other hand, the citation links are rendered in markdown and will still function in other applications - so there’s a design trade off.

Nevertheless, is this optionality that can (or will) exist?

Can’t you just include in your prompt an instruction to include the case or document citation and a link back to the paragraph or page of the original document in support of each proposition? It works reasonably well for me.

DT4 can do this exceptionally well. To some extent it depends upon the AI model you choose however.

Claude 4 Sonnett and GPT-5 can even give you multiple in-line citations if your document(s) contain multiple sources to validate a given fact.

You’re right, the citation style seems to depend on the model and also the prompt. A little more experimentation is required…
