Installed DevonThink To Go 4 on iPad -- sync doesn't work

DEVONthink to Go 4 on my iPad yesterday (I’ve had DEVONthink 4 Pro on my MacBook for awhile). It installed quickly and with no problems that I recognized and loaded all the sync files I had on DTTG 3. I set up sync with Bonjour (what I have been using all along) but it does not work. I can not get it to sync. I sync just one database and that is open on my MacBook, both my computer and iPad are on my home WiFi network and as I said the DTtG 4 settings on my iPad correctly show my MacBook.

How should I troubleshoot this?

Harold

Sorry you are having trouble … I suggest you start with the advice as referenced at DEVONtechnologies | FAQ. There are other articles there also which may help.

I double checked these items and I think all is fine. I changed my Bonjour password in case I had typed it incorrectly in DEVONthink to Go. At that point I also notice a port number showing so I changed that to automatic. There is no log activity showing syncs or attempted syncs either on my MacBook DT or my iPad DTtG. On the latter there is no indication that anything is happening. I sync only 1 database (called Current Work) and it is open on both DT and DTtG. I added a new file to that database on my MacBook so that it would easy to see when that went over.

Is there something I have neglected or can check?

Perhaps post screen shots here of your sync settings from both devices.

Also check that Bonjour “allow incoming connections” only turned on one device.

  • Do you mean you upgraded to DEVONthink To Go 4 yesterday?
    • If so, did you delete version 3 and its application data then reboot the device?

Yes, I did. I deleted DTtG 3 after I had installed DTtG4. I noted that the files that were in DTtG3 showed in DTtG4 (I assume they were transferred – it was not a new sync) and then I did. After deleting DTtG3 from my iPad I rebooted it. A copy of DTtG3 still exists on my iPhone. I was planning to delete that as I never use it. I looked at it just now and there has been no recent activity there.

Make sure DEVONthink is enabled in iOS’ Settings > Privacy & Security > Local Network.

It is.

Screen shots of sync config on all devices would help. otherwise just pot shots.

Are these helpful?

Here is one more from my iPad

Here is maybe something. When sending the screenshots from my iPad to my MacBook via Air Drop I noticed this (my question followed by AI generated response):
These are results for My iPad seems to have 2 different names for my MacBook. In DevonThink to Go my MacBook is harold sjursen@macbook-pro-4 but AirDrop identifies my MacBook as MacBook Pro 2. Is this a problem? Might it be an explanation for why DevonThink sync does not work?

AI Overview

Yes, having different names can be a sign of a network or Bonjour confusion, and it is a likely reason your local DEVONthink sync is failing. DEVONthink relies heavily on precise local network hostname matching (harold sjursen@macbook-pro-4) via Bonjour, while AirDrop pulls its naming from your sharing settings or personal Contact card, which often mismatch if local hostnames append numbers due to network conflicts

But the names according to DEVONthink to Go and what settings on my MacBook are essentially the same:

MacBook -

DTtG -

So I don’t think this should be the issue

Did the screenshots show up any errors/problems?

It looks like you never added any sync location.
Your screenshot shows only a list of the available options, i.e. potential sync locations.

You proceed by tapping the green plus icon next to the sync location you wish to set up.

Yes I did press the green plus icon and chose the MacBook-Pro-4 local network option, saved and typed in the Bonjour password I set in my MacBook. Sync still does not happen.

I have rebooted both devices (MacBook & iPad) as well as my cable router.

I hope someone can help me. I am soon to travel when I will need access to my current synced files on my iPad.

Harold

Did you toggle any databases in the sync location?

From Sync > Sync Setup Basics in the manual:

You could set up sync using iCloud as a temporary work-round and try to solve the original problem later. I tend to have both set up and switch between them according to need. And if I were travelling I would prefer iCloud because I could potentially upload material to the sync location that would then be accessible on another device (e.g. my phone).
