No, this isn’t possible unless you had some matching criteria. For example, you could add a tag like isFavorite, tag favorited items with it, and use that tag as the matching criterion.

thank you Jim. One problem is that my favorites are constantly changing. The tag would have to self delete when the item is removed from favorites.

I’m curious why you’d need a smart group when the Favorites are already accessible in the Navigate sidebar.

you are right and I was totally confused. I stupidly did not realize that by clicking on them one navigates automatically to their location. Sorry !
