Before DS express, I had a keyboard shortcut to open search in Devonthink directly.
Yep, I just set one up in Keyboard Maestro.
Can you clarify this?
Used KM to use a function key to trigger the menu: Go > To Documents…
Gotcha.
That is what I did as well ![]()
I don’t use KM, but I’m curious: if your focus is on a another app, ex Safari, do you need to switch to DT and then trigger KM shortcut, or triggering the KM shortcut do the switch to DT as well ?
Keyboard Maestro allows to
- assign a shortcut
- switch to DT from another app
- trigger a command in DT
Which is a quick way to access DEVONthink features.
With Alfred and the ‘menubar search’ workflow you can call the Go - To Document as well, but you have to activate DEVONthink first.
-
Just to add, KM allows to have similar “menubar search” experience ala Alfred.
You can create a a following global macro:
Then when the hot key is hit, a pop up search bar appears:
-
My favorite method of triggering KM Marcos is nowadays from Alfred, so that I can stick to one single search bar and shortcut. There is an incredible sophisticated Alfred workflow called conductor which you can adopt to your needs. It is able to search and activate KM macros:
- My new favorite way to search in DT is directly from within Devonsphere Express via a global hotkey:
But that way I do not need to launch the full DT UI, I can preview the file directly in DS express, and if needed open it in both DT or 3P app. Plus, if desired, DS Express is able to present web search results as well, which would not be available in DT (I do not use this personally but it is worth mentioning):
Very cool @jooz, I didn’t know about that “trigger macro by name” action in KM!
Thanks a lot for these tips @jooz , really cool !
This seems to be working fine now
…
Me too. I only discovered it when Bluefrog mentioned it recently. Now I have assigned it to a function key for quick access.
