Just curious: Why "search" in Sorter searches only groups and not files?

So my question is in topic title … I was thinking that feature would speed up the work significantly in certain cases.

Does someone would make use of this ?

Thanks

It searches for groups because it’s made for filing documents, i.e., it’s for sorting. It is not intended for accessing your documents.

In DEVONthink, choose Go > To Document and tear it off the toolbar. You can then quickly search for and access documents.

If you want a small utility window to search your databases – including documents – I can recommend this Raycast extension:

I’m surprised it only has 3.077 installs

I’ve sometimes wanted this as well. Some documents have a lot of fascinating See Also document results. Being able to select all of the results and do something with them (e.g. replicate to a new group) could be better than adding a second search bar in that inspector pane.

Edit: actually, replicating all to a group for filtering should be scriptable. There’s an example of getting See Also results in Scripts > New…

DEVONsphere Express can already search your open databases.

Thanks all for your thoughts,

this is good is you know the name of the document + you need to switch to DT …

This probably would do, but I already have Alfred so me personally would avoid installing another tool… I believe that number of tools should be limited for better productivity.
Actually for DT3 there was Alfred w/flow for searching/open documents but it doesnt work in DT4 .. hope soon new version to come out.

So as Bluefrog mentioned, atm, fastest moment to search/open document is via DS, no matter if your focus is on another app … plus DS has preview function → so DS sold  I’m buying the license

Cheers

now I understood this part … cause I never used the Sorter … Search is for where to put the new quick note … I’m missing face_palm emoji atm …

Haha - no worries! Early on I wondered the same thing you did. But I talked to development and the logic became really clear.

In case you missed it, a couple of folks in here have already started updating the code for Alfred to work with DT4: Alfred Workflow for DT 3.x - #40 by gg378

Thanks MsLogica, I was not aware of this thread.
Sharing your hope łnternet is full with good people and someone will share clean and tested code for DT4.

Cheers

You can already do this in the GUI, even if scripting opens up more possibilities.

Hold down Cmd or Shift while clicking/dragging the See Also results in the inspector.

(At least this works in DT3; I still haven’t upgraded. It would surprise me if it doesn’t work similarly in DT4)

Ah, thanks! I probably tried cmd+a instead of shift-selecting and stopped trying. It still works in DT4.

Today I realized that quick open Devonthink files via Devonsphere will not work good if you have versioning on: this is because DS will return in the list all 5 (if your versioning number is 5 for ex) version in the list, so you’re not sure which one is the latest one …

That’s actually an issue of DEVONthink 4.0.2 which shouldn’t add the hidden versions to the Spotlight index. The next release will fix this.

good to know, thanks !!

I can only +1. It is a pity I have discovered that little tool (DS express) too late, yet it is perfect for search and preview if the full DT workflow is not needed at the moment. It is now my go to place to start a search.

How many years of using DT, and yet I never noticed this feature! I usually use the search to find a relevant doc, but it’s overkill for navigation – this is perfect. Now I just need to remember that it is there…

Though I don’t usually tear it off (as I’m typically on a 13" Mac), I use Go > To Document at least 25 times a day.

I just changed the keyboard shortcut for it to make it easier for me to remember. Wacky thought: ever toy with putting this search ability at the top of the sidebar or a List view?

No discussions I’m aware of, though @cgrunenberg would know better than I.
