I understand that MS Word docs cause a number technical challenges, but…

Is there a way to set the viewer so that MS Word docs automatically trigger the “text alternative” previewer rather than having to manually make that change?

You can surely control that with a Word macro which would launch on opening the file.

The alternate view is automatically used for search results (to highlight occurrences), otherwise the default view due to the better layout.
