MS Word switching active file to a temp one (thus losing changes)

This is an odd one, would be interested to know if it’s a bug or just my set-up.

  1. Open a file (‘TestFile.docx’) by double-clicking in DV. Word opens when it can be bothered.
  2. Edit file and hit command S (finger memory from the 90s)
  3. Make another edit and save again.

At this point, Word renames the file to something temporary, starting with a tilde (eg WRD1212). Subsequent saves to go that file, not TestFile.docx. When closing the saved file, all work is therefore lost (unless I can find the folder the temp file is in).

This doesn’t seem to happen if I open the file by double-clicking in Finder. Anyone have any ideas? I have to manually Save As then swap the new file for the old (very fiddly).

solved! My last question here was about permissions so I wondered if it was that. Gave MS Word full disk access and it seems to be behaving. (I’ll leave this here in case it’s useful to anyone else). Cheers, folks, and Happy New Year to those for whom it is NY.

Note that is the usual behavior for Word. It’s generates a temporary document while you’re working. However, it should clean that up on its own. Perhaps it couldn’t without Full Disk Access.
