(Nearly) All databases duplicated

Hi,

migrating my data to a new Mac, I just saw that most of my databases (for most of them, databases I’ve not opened for a while) are duplicated :

same name,

same dates (added, created, modified),

exact same size/weight,

and same place/folder.

Any thoughts about what happened, and what I should do ?
I guess I have to trash the duplicates, but..

Thanks for your help and thoughts

  • How are you migrating?
  • And duplicated where? They can’t have the same name and be in the same Finder folder.

That’s before migrating, on my “source” iMac. Seems strange to me too. Screenshot here attached.

So, it has nothing to do with migration – you have duplicated databases on your old Mac. Apparently in the filesystem, assuming that the screenshot shows a search result in Finder.
I suggest that you look at the folders where these duplicates live

Indeed, the location isn’t shown in your cropped screen captures. Choose View > Show Status Bar in the Finder, then select one then the other database in a pair. Where are they each located?

yes, I discovered that when starting my migration process, but it has nothing to do with it, sorry if my post leads to a misunderstanding.

Well, that’s crazy. I did the exact search this morning in order to answer to you… no more duplicates
So it seems it was a non issue on DT side, maybe an issue with the finder itself ? I don’t understand.

Thanks for your help and support, I now can go back to my migration process.

Are these database packages spread around in many folders? I have mine in one place for simplicity ~/Documents/DEVONthink/. easy to find no searching.

BTW, it’s another topic, but what should I do why getting this message saying the base is already in use ?

Press Continue. Is there a crossed pencil icon to the right of the database’s name in the Navigate sidebar?

No, I don’t see one. I frequently had this message in the past, what should I do when it happens again ?

I took the occasion to put all my bases in the same folder : HD/Users/myName/Devonthink Bases.

Is it correct to put them in a folder at the root of my user folder ?

Can’t see any issue with that. It’s part of your secured user space.

That’s fine. DEVONthink does create a Databases folder in your home directory but it’s not required to use. It’s just a convenience item in a data-safe location, with easy access.

It depends on the situation. A database rebuild may resolve it but if it’s from Migration Assistant or a Time Machine restoration, it may require a bit more effort. In those cases, open a support ticket.

OK thanks !

Thanks again for your help.
I’m now resuming DT installation on my new Mac.
As I’m keeping the ‘old’ one, and do not migrate the whole Mac, I choosed not to transfer the bases, but to sync them with my ‘new’ Mac.

I’ve read in your migration tutorial the issue regarding files indexed -instead of imported- in the source base, who will not be migrated. Will I have the same issue when syncing, I mean files indexed in the source base not synced to the new Mac ?

Which would mean that, as long as need files accessible outside of the main Mac, it will only work for imported files ?

I have to dig this topic, I understand it after reading a few help posts that :

  • I have to opt for indexed files if I need to share these files through a Dropbox share or download link,

  • If I don’t (personal files) it’s better to choose the importing route.

The issue being when a base contains both indexed and imported folders and files.

From where are you indexing files on the old machine? It sounds like from Dropbox but it’s unclear.

Sorry, My English is not very accurate, I meant DEVONthink Sync, Dropbox option.
I edited my post in order to clarify it. ..

No worries!
This question still stands:

  • Are you indexing versus importing files into your databases?
    • If so, from where?

Also, sync is a very simple concept and process. In the built-in Help and manual, we have included a description, technical considerations, and the clear, step-by-step instructions for each sync method.

The files I’m indexing are mainly files which are in either in my DropBox or in iCloud.
