I have been using DT3 for years but actually, I don’t really use it much. I’m too incompetent in understanding the details of the DT3 interface. Actually, I must’ve gotten a little bit smarter because the YouTube videos don’t seem so overwhelming anymore. Recently, I started using AI to revamp my Obsidian vault. AI is so helpful. I realized that I didn’t have to put up with the problems of Obsidian and I actually could use DT4 fully. What I don’t understand, AI will understand. Or I can ask the forum. So I’m only going to use Obsidian for its mobile capacities. Most of my notes will shift over to DT4.
I’m happy with my tag system in Obsidian. The tags are nested. How do I create nested tags in DT4? Also, I have many tags in my current DT4. They are not organized the way my Obsidian vault is. In fact, they’re rather chaotic. I would like to get rid of them all and start again. I’m asking AI to instruct the AI of DT4 to follow my Obsidian tagging system. I want to give AI a list of my current tags and ask it to use those. If I erase my current rather chaotic DT4 tags which contains some of the Obsidian tags also, I am assuming AI will be competent in replacing those tags with the appropriate ones. Or should I just hide those tags and get rid of them later?
There’s an excellent, very clear section about nested tags on page 21 of the exemplary manual (also available through the in-app Help). I’m afraid I can’t assist with your other questions as I don’t use the AI facilities of DT4—but, don’t worry, others who do will soon be along to help.
Aside from what @Stephen_C said, if you have to create the tag list for your prompt anyway, why not just directly recreate the structure in DT? Seems like less work, as if you try to do it via AI, you not only need to recreate the list, you also need to figure out how to draft the prompt, which creates an additional step in the process. I don’t know for sure, though, as I do not use AI for any tagging.
Re: your “chaotic” tags, if you have no more use for them, there is no harm in trashing them.
Compared to my Obsidian tagging system which I have trimmed for years, DT3 was not well understood by me, so my tags are terrible in comparison to the current state of my Obsidian tags. It is a comparison of the incompetent me using DT3 and the more competent me making Obsidian tags. Not a comparison of DT3 and Obsidian.
adding tags in DT4 looks laborious to me. But I have not read the manual. In general manual reading is so hard for me. Now if AI will read the manual, I am sure the right process will occur. I already have the list of my Obsidian tags. So, I (and AI) will look at the information on tagging and improving my nesting for DT4.
If you have AI set up with an API key in DEVONthink’s AI > Chat settings, you can open the built-in Help and use the Help Assistant to ask questions about the documentation.
I read somewhere in AI answers that on the DEVONthink forum, some people have trouble adding hashtag tags #tag. Is it best for me to eliminate the hashtag before loading my tags?
