The one thing above all I was assuming would be in DTTG 3 is favorites sync. Instead, it looks like I have to continue to flag my favorites to see them in a special section on my iPhone and iPad. Any hope of it coming in a future version?
It’s planned for a future release.
Great, thanks!
Thanks, that will be very much appreciated.
Nice feature! I’d also appreciate a sync. I like to basically put docs on the mobile for quick access in the near future.
Just as a teaser, support for syncing the Reading List between DEVONthink and DEVONthink To Go is coming in a future release
Oh yeah! Just wondering where are my favorites on mobile and found this post. Looking forward to this feature!
Welcome @miz
Note: The Reading List could be used as a secondary Favorites, but there are two distinct options: Favorites and the Reading List.
Currently, the Reading List syncs, the Favorites do not.
Is Favorites sync coming soon? Any dates that we are looking at?
As you no doubt know from reading this forum, DEVON Technologies do not make many promises about future versions and never publish target dates. I personally think that a very good thing.
Almost one year, I am still looking for favourites sync as RSS Feed can be added to Favourites but not Reading List. Is this coming soon?
No, there is nothing to report on this.
Absolutely agree! That is the whole point of favorites: you should have access to them from everywhere!
Love DEVONthink, but this seems like a big miss all the way to version 3.
What about favorites referring to non-synced items (eg a group in a database that’s not synced)?
Seems like a bit of a rare case where you wouldn’t be syncing your “favorite“ items, but in any case, perhaps just indicate that the item isn’t synced/available.
I think it’s far more common than you imagine, especially based on the relatively low number of inquiries over the years.
Gotcha. I guess I’m just not understanding the used case expected for Favorites.
I am assuming, like Evernote and other apps, that it gives you easy access from anywhere to items that you frequently access.
It must be something different for many DEVONthink users.
Thanks.
I have databases that are very work-centric and databases that are very personal and non-work creative project centric. I use a mix of syncing (Bonjour, Dropbox) over three devices (Laptop, phone, pad).
At work the personal databases don’t get opened much. The favourites on my laptop are almost all work related. The favourites on my iOS devices are almost all personal. I do use the Phone and iPad for work but for some reason I never need to use favourites there. I think favourites, for me at least, are more important on the laptop because there is just so many more options there (windows, views, columns etc)
BTW The only things I put in the Global Inbox are the DT and DTTG manuals, some CSS-for-markdown development and alternatives, and every once in a while, a temp file that has no obvious place to go (AirBnB details, family travel contact info, etc) and will eventually become obsolete.
A general rule I have about DT and DTTG is that no amount of generalizing about the way people would, could, or should use it will ever capture the full breadth of actual uses. Sometimes that makes it hard to find out how to do something new because you might be coming at it from an entirely unexpected direction and the terminology isn’t what you’re expecting. That’'s one reason why I have the manuals in my Global Inbox. A quick read or flip through sometimes surfaces something that I’ve never thought I would need before.
@SlickSlack’s sage comments surely apply here.
And for myself, I use favorites on my Mac differently than mobile. This is especially true as I don’t sync all my databases between devices. There is no need for me to do it so I’d end up with irrelevant favorites on some devices.
@SlickSlack / @BLUEFROG, thanks for the thoughts. That all makes complete sense. As I’ve read more about various use cases, I can see it’s all over the place for functionality like this.
What I’ve done for now is just created a Favorites Group inside the Global Inbox for the various databases where they apply. E.g., Inbox/Personal/Favorites. This works for me for now.
Awesome tool! And super fun to learn more and more about its powerful capabilities. Am also learning Tinderbox, so, wow, I’m set for an eternity!
