No links returned for Bing

I am trying to learn DEVONagent and am getting no results for Bing searches - I have replicated the same search in Deeper, Express, and Deep with no results from Bing at any time. Log says “Links:0” in each case.

I am not using a VPN and I don’t appear to be throttled (or at least I’m not getting a captcha challenge when I visit Bing in my web browser).

I am getting results from Google.

I am using a fresh installation and have not altered any settings.

Welcome @Mz4BYMPogSqBP :slightly_smiling_face:

Could you give an example query and describe in more detail what you are doing?

Some quick examples, all with the same query.

DEVON search through Bing search set

“Deeper” search:

Here is the URL from the log: (thomas jefferson) china - Search

I would expect there to be more than 0 links, considering DEVON is processing many Google links and I can see many Bing results when running the query in the web browser.

I mostly use the Deep/Deeper/Deepest search sets with the Google, DuckDuckGo, Bing and Yahoo plugins together. I don’t remember if I used to get Bing results or not.

I did a little testing with just the Bing plugin and also got no results (“Links: 0 of 1”). The log just shows a URL like this:

https://www.bing.com/search?q={query}&filt=all&first=1

But… If I right-click the URL in the log and open it in DEVONagents browser, then run the search again, I get results. Now there is also a query string looking like this:

/search?q={query}&filt=all&first=11

… which returns some results, though not many (“Links: 10 of 11”).

Since opening the URL in a browser window changed the behaviour, I suspected it might have to do with cookies. Normally I have my settings on Accept cookies: Only from sites you navigate to. I changed it to Always, and now the Bing plugin returns results consistently. It looks pretty stingy with the amount of results though. Changing Results per Plugin doesn’t seem to change that.

I’m not sure if Microsoft changed something that means the Bing plugin might need some adjustments. It looks like it has to do with the first parameter… Something with the offset in returned results? @cgrunenberg

This may be due to changes made in Bing, utilizing more JavaScript.

This isn’t in a search but in a DA browser with JavaScript disabled…

Logically, there are such recipes.

So does this mean using the bing webservice is just broken until you all ship a fix? That is really unfortunate for my use case.

I can’t speak for development and say there will be a fix to ship as they would have to assess if it’s something that can be addressed on our side.

Why are you requiring Bing specifically?

I’m just a regular user, not affiliated with the company.

You could start by changing your cookie settings like I suggested. Go to Settings > Web and set Accept Cookies to Always. That makes the Bing plugin return some results for me.

Is searching Bing what makes or breaks DEVONagent’s utility for you?

The technology and infrastructure underlying the internet is constantly evolving. It’s unfortunately to be expected that the interface between two things breaks sometimes.

I think you are seeing anecdotal behavior - descriptive, not prescriptive.

Note JavaScript is enabled, as well as always allowing cookies…

Ecosia search…

Hmm, seems you’re right.

For a short while it wouldn’t even let me search in the browser. Until I changed the cookie settings in Bing itself to allow analytics.

What OS are you on? I’m on a Ventura Mac right now.

Same. 13.7.2

As an update, there could have been (can be) some interruption of service. Our CTO/Lead Developer mentioned Bing is working for him today, so I ran a quick search and…

That is with Enable JavaScript checked, just to be thorough.

Can confirm. With JavaScript enabled, and Accept cookies: Only from sites you navigate to.
