Open markdown link in new window?

I love how DEVONthink has settings (“General” page, “Interface” tab) to control whether clicking links always opens them externally, and to allow double clicking to open groups in a new window and documents externally as well. What I find myself missing increasingly is the ability to tailor similar behavior for Markdown links.

Yes, I know I can hold down the Ctrl key and click (or just right click) to get a popup menu that lets me open the link in a new tab. Yes, I also know I can middle click the link with a suitable mouse to open it in a new tab in a single operation. And if I choose to Ctrl/right click and select “Open Link in DEVONthink 3”, then I get the resulting Markdown document in a new window. But it’s a two-step process, and I have to remember every time.

Is there any way to customize the defaults for Markdown links as with other sorts of links? In particular, I tend to copy a lot of page links from PDF files so that in my Markdown notes I can easily pull up the precise page with the documentation I want. It would be nice if double clicking would open automatically in a new window or if I could set DEVONthink to open always in a new window and not a tab or something like that. Thanks in advance if I’ve overlooked something!

The way I open a markdown link in a new window is to double click on the link in the links inspector. I don’t know if that might be helpful for you.

Ah, that’s very helpful, thank you! I didn’t even know that links inspector would show that kind of detail for Markdown documents. I really need to find the time to work through the DEVONthink manual. It reminds me of Directory Opus insofar as I just keep learning/finding things it has already done forever that I didn’t even realize existed. Cheers!

Links aren’t double-clickable.

Thank you

Ok, how about option-clicking? Cmd + ctrl + clicking? Cmd + shift + ctrl + clicking? Cmd + ctrl + shift + option + clicking? Anything would work as a shortcut, though I leave it to the far more learned minds at DEVONtechnologies to come up with something more “consistent” in the overall DEVONthink scheme of things.

Hello @BLUEFROG, I’d like to echo @Phileosophos 's feature request above, i.e., a keyboard shortcut that allows users to open a wikilink/item link from within a document.

I’m aware of the two other options (contextual menu and the Links inspector), but being able to open links in-line in new windows with a shortcut (say, Shift + clicking) is more convenient. Plus, I don’t think any of those example shortcuts Philiosophos listed are currently being used for other purposes.

My personal preference would be to assign the behavior of Shift + clicking to opening links in new windows because that’s my muscle memory from using Firefox- and Chromium-based browsers, but I just tested it out in Safari and apparently this shortcut adds the link to Safari’s reading list, so my preference may not be that appealing to others.
