Open word documents indexed in DT leads to spinning wheel in DT

When I open a WORD-Document that is indexed in DEVONThink, this mostly results in the spinning wheel in the DT-window. This ends when I switch to the WORD-Document and click on the open document. After some time, the spinning wheel occurs again and I can use the same workaround. This only occurs with MS WORD (actual version 16.50, but occurred also in earlier versions) and in no other MS Office application or any other application. I work with DT3 Pro v.3.7.2 (problem also occurred in earlier versions) and macOS 11.4.

Where are the files indexed from - on a connected server, the local hard drive, …?

I still have the same problem. My files are in the icloud, but also available without internet connection. Interestingly, the problem is not present in MS Excel.

A couple of points:

  • Apple’s iCloud is notorious for being unreliable for some, so while you files may seem to be “offline”, they may not be or they may not be the same version as on Apple’s iCloud server so iCloud process on your machine is working to resolve that on behalf of the macOS system. DEVONthink makes requests of the macOS file system to deliver a file to itself, not iCloud.

  • Per the link below, Apple explains that files in their iCloud service are designated “offline” file by file, not folder by folder, so it could be that the files you are attempting to open are in fact not offline and your Apple macOS knows it so Apple macOS is telling Apple iCloud to “go get it”.

Or something like that?

Unless you have a specific reason to “index”, perhaps “import” them into DEVONthink to avoid all this extra complexity.
