It drives me mildly batty to click on a Formatted Note in DTTG3 on iPad and then have to go click the Download button. The vast majority of hte time, if I’m clicking on an item, I want it to be local so I can review it. Is there a setting someplace that I’m missing? (I don’t think so, but maybe looking in the wrong place)
In sync settings, I specified Always Download
instead of Demand

Welcome @Trager
There is nothing wrong here. As @DTLow hinted at, you are using a shallow sync so the contents are not on your iPad, only the metadata.
- Go into Settings > Sync: Locations, tap the Edit button, tap the sync location and set Download Files to Always.
- Leave the sync settings alone but long-press the database on DEVONthink To Go’s home screen and choose Info. Set Download Files to Always.
- Leave the database’s settings alone but go into the database, long-press a group, choose Info, and set Download Files to Always.
Also, if you want to use a shallow sync but preserve the content of items you downloaded, go into the settings and change the Keep slider to a higher value.

Ah, I thought that I had done so, but that setting didn’t carry over when I switched devices! That explains the perceived change in behavior. Thanks!
