Password protection of database not always working

I’m using DEVONthink version 4.0.2. I have one database that is password protected to open, and in all previous versions of this software the password protection has been solid. But not in this version. Sometimes when I open this password-protected file, it simply opens without my having to enter the password. Please fix, this database needs t remain private and available only to me.

Thank you for the feedback! The handling of encrypted databases is actually identical in both version (as it’s the same code). Are e.g. documents still externally opened when closing the database?

When I have DEVONthink open, my password protected database (Paul.dtSparse) opens without a password required when either 1) I go the menu bar and select File/Open Recent/Paul.dtSparse or 2) I go the menu bar and select File/Open Database and select Paul.dtSparse from the finder. In the past, selecting the database required entering my password to open it. With previous versions of the app, I was still required to open the database by entering my password.
It’s only when I quit DEVONthink, open it again, and select the Paul.dtSparse database by either of the above methods that I’m asked for my password to open it. Also, when I close that database and open it again, it again requires my password to open. Good! But why should I now need to quit DEVONthink to get the password-protected database to behave properly?

I’m confused. First you stay that you have to quit DEVONthink to be prompted for a password. But then you say that you’re also prompted for a password if you close a database and open it again – without quitting DT, it sounds like? Those are mutually exclusive.

I never used encrypted databases, so I’m not sure exactly how they’re supposed to behave. I would only expect to enter the password when opening the database. Do you want to be prompted for the password every time you select the database, even if it’s already open?

I’ve noticed this just a handful of times under v4.0.2. Sometimes when DEVONthink is open, I can open my encrypted database without entering the password. I can quit the database and then open it again–same issue, no password required. When I quit DEVONthink and open it again, calling up the encrypted database will require a password. However, maybe tomorrow, with DEVONthink open all that time, opening my encrypted database will suddenly not require a password. This has happened multiple times. I want to be prompted for the password every time I open the encrypted database; no, of course, when it’s already open (because I applied the password), I don’t need to do that again. But if I quit that database, I expect to be asked for the password when I open it again. Bottom line, the password to open my encrypted database is not always required, much to my surprise and concern.

And that’s exactly how it’s supposed to work, the password is only required if the database isn’t already opened (e.g. after launching the app or after closing the database). But e.g. closing the window and then choosing the database in the File > Recent Database just opens a new window and doesn’t require a password.
