PDF annotations documentation? How to include images?

I looked at the help and downloaded the manual. I can’t find a detailed explanation on how to annotate PDFs including all tools, export annotations, etc
I am specifically looking for a way to include images of tables, graphs, figures etc within annotations. Example, if I wanted to save the 2 images below in red boxes within my annotations.
thanks in advance for your time and help

Image annotations aren’t supported at this time.

DEVONthink 4 supports rectangular annotations e.g. in the Document > Annotations inspector. Likewise Tools > Summarize Annotations and Insert Summarize Annotations (see pop-up menu of Annotations & Reminder inspector) includes these annotations.

Hi @BLUEFROG

  • if I summarize annotations as RTF, I can’t find where that RTF is located.
  • does the RTF annotations summary keep up to date with new annotations, or do I have to generate a new RTF if I add annotations ?
  • is it possible to scale images in an RTFD?
  • thank you !

I tried with a test rtfd document, and in DEVONthink there is no apparent way to scale imported images. I also tried in Apple’s TextEdit, upon which DEVONthink’s editor is based (if not cloned … dunno) and not apparently possible there either. Maybe a way, but did not see.

“Open with” Apple’s Pages (which I presume you have) makes it possible to scale the image in a rtfd stored in DEVONthink. Probably other editors will work for you. Try.

I didn’t test your other questions as I don’t use Annotations, so I can’t help. Maybe just try and see what happens?

thank you very much for the info about DEVONthink using a textedit clone.
I will simply scale my images in Bear - very simple.
Yes, I should test my other questions myself, but first I have to find where the RTF file is located.
thank you for your post.

This “clone” is just the text engine of macOS which is used by DEVONthink, TextEdit and many other apps.

thank you for the clarification. My apologies for a poor choice of the term “clone”.

Typically in the same group as the annotated document.

  • does the RTF annotations summary keep up to date with new annotations, or do I have to generate a new RTF if I add annotations ?

No, this is not a live document, tracking changes to the annotations.

  • is it possible to scale images in an RTFD?

Within DEVONthink, no. But if you double-click an embedded image in an RTFD file, it will open in the system default image editor, e.g., Preview. Resize and save the file and the change will be reflected in the document in DEVONthink.

You’re welcome
