How do you add bookmarks and/or highlights to a pdf in DTTG. I can’t believe that such basic pdf features are not available so I am probably missing something. I have tried using another app to annotate a DTTG doc (PDFexpert, Documents) but they import the doc and don’t modify the original doc in place. I also don’t see a way to list the existing highlights (made before importing into DTTG…?
Update: kept searching and found that Goodreader can edit in place and is indeed a good pdf reader that can make bookmarks
As has been discussed many times, PDF bookmarks are not standardized so each application implements their own proprietary support. This means bookmarks in one application aren’t necessarily available in another application.
That being said, of course you can annotate a PDF in DEVONthink To Go and this has been possible for years now. Tap the Edit button while viewing a PDF and you’ll see the tools available. Here is an example on an iPhone…
Thanks Bluefrog. I had indeed found the annotation tools but could not find a listing of those annotations or bookmarks. How am I to find them back again. Sorry to be perhaps ignorant of those functions but I can’t find them. I looked in the documentation.
Given that PDF bookmarks are not standardized so each application implements their own proprietary support, does DEVONthink implement bookmarks somehow? How can I bookmark pages to get them to appear in the “Bookmarked” tab?
Welcome @Lorna
There is no bookmarking functionality there.
That is something from the third-party PDF framework we use in DEVONthink To Go. It is not in use as it’s proprietarty to apps using their framework. DEVONthink and Preview (among others) use Apple’s PDFKit. Apps like PDF Expert and Acrobat use their own. None of these bookmarks are standardized and they don’t work across these apps.
Bookmarks are usually just entries in the table of contents of PDF documents. While it’s true that there’s no standard to mark a bookmark as such, in the end it’s based on this standard PDF feature in many apps.
That’s why the table of contents of PDF documents is editable in DEVONthink 4.x and bookmarks can be easily added, renamed, organized and removed. But this functionality is not limited to your own additions, it’s also available for already existing entries in table of contents.
