Persistent "file pending upload" notification – can I clean this up myself?

Hi everyone,

I keep getting a recurring notification in DEVONthink telling me there is still a file pending upload to my sync store. The notification keeps reappearing even after waiting a while, so it doesn’t seem to resolve on its own.

A few questions:

  1. What exactly does this mean? Is there a specific file stuck in the upload queue, or could this be a more general sync state issue?
  2. Can I identify which file is causing the problem? I had a look at the log (Window → Log), but I’m not always sure what I’m looking at there.
  3. Is it safe to clean this up myself? I know there is a “Clean Up” option in Preferences → Sync for the individual sync locations – is that the right approach here, or could it cause data loss?
  4. Are there any other recommended steps before resorting to a full clean-up, such as verifying and repairing the database?

For context: I’m running the current version of DEVONthink on macOS, iPad and iPhone. My sync store is WebDAV.

Any guidance would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Have you run verify and repair? You ask about doing it but it won’t cause any harm and it should be done regularly anyway. Do all your devices and databases, not just the one reporting the issue.

After you’ve done that if you still get the error you can search item:pending. But I wouldn’t bother doing that until you’ve run verify.

I wanted to add a couple of further observations that might be helpful.

First, regarding the “pending upload” notification: I have run “Verify & Repair” on the affected databases, but the issue persists. The notification appears across 4 or 5 of my databases simultaneously, so it doesn’t seem to be isolated to a single database or file.

Second, I’ve also noticed noticeably long loading times when browsing through search results and opening documents one by one – sometimes several seconds per document, which makes reviewing results quite tedious.

Could the loading times be related to the sync issue, or is that likely a separate problem (e.g. indexing or database health)? And given that “Verify & Repair” hasn’t resolved the pending upload issue, what would be the recommended next step – is it safe to use the “Clean Up” option in Preferences → Sync? Any guidance would be very welcome.

Verify & Repair Database won’t resolve the issue and neither would cleaning the sync location.

No, there is no correlation to slowdowns in browsing.

Do a toolbar search for item:pending. What do you find?

Thank you for the suggestion – that was very helpful.

I ran a toolbar search for item:pending and found 203 files that have not been downloaded yet. Most of them show a small sync icon next to the filename. Interestingly, for some files this icon disappears immediately when I click on them (presumably triggering the download on demand), but for the majority it remains.

In the meantime, the “pending upload” notification has narrowed down to two databases: one showing 1 file pending, and another showing 59 files pending.

In DEVONthink, hold the Option key and select Help > Report Bug to start a proper support ticket.
