Potential Solution for Sync Store Issues on Synology Router (WebDAV)

I wanted to share a solution that might help others facing a similar issue. If this seems too unconventional, I kindly ask the moderator to delete this post, as I don’t want to cause confusion.

Setup:

  • Device: MacBook with multiple databases
  • Network: Synology Router 6600 AX with attached USB storage
  • Software: WebDAV on Synology Router running with a separate WebDAV user

Goal:

To run the sync store on the WebDAV server on the Synology router.

Issue:

I successfully synced my databases from my MacBook to different WebDAV server (on a Synology NAS) in the past. However, this time with the Synology Router, while the upload seemed to work, the databases (except for the global inbox) were not visible on other devices like my iPad and iPhone. Additionally, changes made to the global inbox synced to the sync store but did not appear on my iPhone or iPad.

Solution:

It took me a while to figure this out, but here’s what worked:

  1. I initially created a folder on the Synology NAS using the admin account and synced from my MacBook. However, after changing the folder ownership to the “webdav-user,” the issue persisted—databases were still not visible on my iPad or iPhone.
  2. Suspecting a permissions issue, I tried a different approach:
  • Step 1: Create the folder for the sync store on the Synology NAS.
  • Step 2: Immediately change the folder owner to the “webdav-user.”
  • Step 3: Only after changing ownership, set up the sync store.

This fixed the issue, and the sync started working as expected across all devices, including my iPad and iPhone.

Observation:

I have used other NAS devices for sync stores without encountering this issue (with at least three different setups). It might have something to do with the file system on the attached USB device (EXT4 in this case).

I hope this helps someone who is searching for a solution!
