I have been keeping my DTP3 sync store on a Synology Diskstation, using webdav. I have no technical expertise in this area and cannot remember why I chose webdav. A couple of days ago, I changed the password for my Diskstation. I went into DTP3, selected the Sync store, displayed info and changed the password. (or I tried to - it is hard to be sure when you cannot see the password but only a row of dots). However, I simply could not get it to connect. Authentication failure. The problem arises on two Macs.
In the end, the only way I could get DTP3 syncing again was to direct Finder to the folder on the Synology that contained the sync store, logging in using the new password. When I double clicked on it, the Sync store appeared in DTP as a Local Sync Store and it appeared to work.
My question is whether there is any disadvantage in using this method of connecting to the sync store. If there is, then does anyone have ideas on how best to solve the problem with webdav - for example, is there an addition place where I need to update the password? My guess is that I am blind to something that should be obvious. Or I could try some other method. DTTG is not syncing either, but that is for later.
There is no such thing as “the password” – every user should have their own password. So, did you change the password of an administrative user? Of the WebDAV user (if there is a WebDAV user)?
Your password should be stored in either the macOS keychain or a password manager like 1Password. And it’s trivial to copy it from there.
Which raises the same question as before: Do you use a dedicated webDAV user? Did you change their password? Or another one?
The main disadvantage is that you have to mount the corresponding NAS volume. Probably manually. If you don’t, no sync will happen. With WebDAV, that is not necessary.
I doubt that there is any problem with WebDAV. If you set up your sync as described here, you’ll probably have a dedicated WebDAV user whose password you did not change.
But if all you’re using are two Macs that are in the same location, Bonjour might indeed be your best choice, as suggested by @DTLow
There isn’t a password on a sync location; there is an encryption key. And no, they’re not the same thing.
Based on what you wrote, it appears you changed the encryption key on the sync store. You can’t just go in and change the key. This is clearly documented in the In & Out > Sync > Basic & How To section of the built-in Help and manual…
Thank you all for the help. I shall investigate the problem in the morning. The password I was referring to was the password for the Synology Diskstation account that I was using to access the Sync store. (I also changed an administrator password, but I was not using that when trying to sync DTP. If I managed to change an encryption key for the Sync Store, that was accidental and I was not aware of it.
I use Norton Password Manager, so the password should have been correct, though sometimes I think I have copied the password when I have not.
The speed with which help has been provided is really impressive. I thought I would have to wait at leas until Monday morning.
