I am a subscriber at The Economist. I tried to copy/paste a few articles to DT both using Firefox and Safari….but it does not work. All I get is the following text on a blank page :
Between the two, the browser extension is what we recommend.
Clipping paywalled sites is not always possible and some sites make it as difficult as possible to keep you on their site, not pinching their content. Also, cookies have not been shared between applications in a long time, so logging in with your browser doesn’t apply to any other app’s cookies.
Add a bookmark to DEVONthink and log in there. Then use the Tools > Capture commands to clip in the desired format and see what you get. Not the clutter-free option will likely not work in this situation but you can test it.
adding a bookmark to the DT first, logging in, and then creating a clip — interesting approach, I haven’t thought of that!
p.s. on many websites, unfortunately, clipping a web article doesn’t work for me…either the formatting is bad, or I get some cookie banners…I tend to either take screenshots or save a page as a PDF
DT has many good ways to clip information. One other option I use when all else fails is a clipper I have that came with Eagle by OGDesign for organizing media assets. One mode it has is a “page” clip which will scroll the active browser window and create an image of the entire scrolled region. So if I’m logged in somewhere already, it simply scrolls and creates a long picture. Which you can then use to create a PDF or whatever to bring into DT.
great point. besides Rich Note - Take Formatted Note, Markdown Note, Plain Note as well using the keyboard shortcuts of those services is very rapid and convenient. Bookmarklets are as well.
I’ve discovered also another way around : I open the article in Safari reader mode….and can then clip to DT with no hitch….no idea why it should work better in that setting…but it does which is what matters.
