Progress? Where is the progress?

My recent discussion on DTP and eMails made me yet another time retry DTTG.

I think I’m just too stupid to understand how to correctly set up the connection such that my iPhone, which sits right next to me and my laptop, receives all mails in a database that is on my Desktop. In earlier versions of DTTP, there was still some kind of progress where you could see that and what it was doing.

Now, all I see is this

And having changed absolutely nothing on DTTP, I’m just at a loss on what is or rather is not working. I see no errors, no progress. It is sitting there at its 2035 objects since ages.

Which version of DEVONthink To Go and iOS do you use?

  • DTTG: 4.2.2 Chandra (18224)
  • DTP: 4.4

and iOS do you use

  • ios 26.7
  • macos 27.2 Beta (26B5091g)

Also, the app on the phone just crashed. Restarting it, “after a while”, it says again, indexing 112 objects for spotlight - why does it not /first/ get all the objects that it is missing from the laptop; I mean that’s what I really want, right? Just get all new content. You can index at some later time, I don’t need to search. I want to “download and run”.

And then “after an even longer while” it says "Synchronising - DevonThinkMail: Sending objects to (user@remote laptop) - so basically that’s even frightening, as the phone has a lot less content than the laptop, and I don’t want it to basically remove stuff on the laptop, rather get stuff from there.

With that said, I’ll just stop it again at this point - I’m too unsure what it is going to do.

Here you see the counts from DTP (lots of content in 2026-Q2, Q3)

And here you see the view from DTTG (nothing in Q2, Q3 - so why is it saying “sending to… the laptop”)

Sync is not a monologue. It is a bi-directional dialogue, with both sides having to receive, assess, and report back on the transactions taking place. It is not some simple file copy from point A to B.

Also, if the app crashed, you should be reporting it to our support ticket system. In DEVONthink To Go, select Action (…) menu > Contact Us to start a support ticket.

In the given case, will the “missing” on the mobile propagate to the laptop (and delete content there), or will the content from the laptop end up on the mobile? That’s what is concerning me most.

I seems that the indexing stalled (no progress). There should be no data loss, it’s just indexing which is independent from sync. Sending us a support ticket from inside the app should give us an idea as this also send us a log file that might contain interesting data.

Crash logs related to DEVONthink To Go from iOS’ Settings > Privacy > Analytics & Improvements > Analytics Data could be interesting too.

What does the counter actually count? It shows 0 while it did import thousands of mails.

Unread items, afair

It might be saying 0 if no indexing has taken place - as per the earlier posts where Eric says it’s stalled.

It seems pointless raising queries or looking at things when you know the app hasn’t functioned correctly and an error needs resolving. Your issue seems a big one (=indexing broken) so there might be all sorts of weird little anomalies until the database has been able to index properly.

p.s. First-time sync always takes a long time with larger databases. You just need to set it up and leave it to do its thing. Once the first big one is done, future syncs should be fairly quick.

Yes, by now it has changed, and apparently it is a very long process - indexed about 4000 objects in one hour. But my iphone is a year old :person_shrugging:

The more relevant issue is how you sync. Bonjour is fastest, everything else goes first out to The Net, possibly updates the sync store there and then goes back to your iPhone.

Is indexing syncing or running just local on the phone

The index does not sync between devices.

By now it has apparently finished doing its thing. Now for some reason, search finds nothing, even it it is right in front…

As mentioned several times already: in DEVONthink To Go, select Action (…) menu > Contact Us to start a support ticket.

Yes. Well, it by now finds something, just search is super slow. But that doesn’t really matter, as I mostly need the mails on the mobile only for integration with other tools like Todoist.

Closing here, thanks.

Mobile development is working on search improvements for a future release. It’s not the same underlying technology as the desktop.

PS: Your situation is atypical, with 100,000+ emails in single database. Yes, it will likely see future search improvements, but it’s less than ideal if troubleshooting is required.
