Purging downloaded files in DTTG

Maybe I’m missing it, but I can’t seem to figure out how to manually purge downloaded files in my databases. I’ve checked the settings of my two databases and they are set to On Demand. Do I need to check all the sub groups inside those databases as well?

What do you have set for the Keep slider in the Settings?

I have it set to 100 items.

You can manually purge items with the Purge command in the context menu when you long-press an item.

Ah, thank you. Sorry I was long holding on databases themselves and those didn’t have a “purge” option. I then tried selecting all the groups at the root level of my databases and found the purge option was then available. That worked a treat.

Thanks!

You’re welcome!
You can also purge the contents of individual documents as well.

I am having a little trouble managing the storage needs of DTTG (my 64Gb iPad is constantly out of space and DT is the largest source of storage). I used to sync about 4 databases between DTTG and DT3/4 through Dropbox (my DTTG instance has been running for many years now); today, these sync stores are unused and I rely on Bonjour (which is brilliant).

My first question is around purging items (which I understand doesn’t remove the item from the database, but removes the downloaded copy from the iPad, right?). Manual ‘purge’ isn’t available as a command for many large individual documents, which the manual suggests may be because the containing group is set to download always (I don’t think that this is the case). Changing the slider on ‘Settings’ from Automatic to Manual also doesnt’ make the purge command available.

To be clear, I don’t have continued need for these files I once downloaded manually, but can’t find a way to purge them manually or automatically via the setting.

A related issue that the despite my playing around with the slider for kept items in setting, e.g. 100, or 500, this doesn’t affect the number of files in the overall Smartgroup under ‘Downloaded’, that is, it seems that there is no automatic purge happening (the file count remain at 2480).

I am probably misunderstanding how this is supposed to work. Thanks for your advice!

Each database has an individual setting for Download Files. Have you verified which databases are shallowly synced?

Thanks, Jim. So I’ve long-clicked every database to confirm that ‘Download Files’ is set to ‘On Demand’ for all four dbs that are loaded onto the iPad. With the exception of the Global Inbox that is ‘Always’ (it contains 73 items, and never more than c. 100).

I’ve also adjusted the Settings slider to ‘automatic’ (under Schedule) and ‘Keep 100 items’.

Would it follow that I should never have more than the contents of the Global inbox + 100 downloaded documents in total, or 4 x 100 for each database? Either is fine, just looking to get my current 2000+ down.

At any rate, my number of downloaded items remains unchanged for now, hence I came looking to enforce a purge.

It should be the total number across all databases.

  • Is the Burns file in the Global Inbox?
  • Or is it in a group set to Download Files: Always ?

Thanks.

So the Burns item, for instance, is located here (folder structure from DT4, rather than the Downloaded smartgroup):

When I click on these the containing groups, they are listed as neither ‘Always’ or ‘On Demand’ (I presume because these inherit their setting from the containing DB in question?)

The Burns items in its native folder:

Just for diligence’s sake, did you view the Burns document ?

What about the sync location itself?

Yes, it’s downloaded and doesn’t allow to be purged. But I’ve opened it and scrolled it, if that’s what you mean.

So here mine looks a little different. I used to sync through Dropbox, then CloudMe, but I’ve disabled all these, and now sync exclusively through Bonjour:

If you tap the Edit button then the sync location, you’ll see the items @troejgaard showed.

Gotcha – that all looks fine:

Hmm. Did you sync after changing the “Download files” setting for all the various items? I’m just guessing here, but maybe you need to sync before the changes are properly registered?

Purging happens locally. It’s entirely unrelated to sync.

Yeah, that was grasping at straws
