Question about Deleting Original Files after ABBYY OCR

I notice that running OCR using ABBYY in Devonthink creates a duplicate file. Is there a way to avoid the duplicate and to have it layer the OCR over the original (like Adobe Pro)? If not, if I dragged and dropped the files into Devonthink from their original folder, am I safe to delete the first file in Devonthink without it deleting the original on my Macbook? Thank you in advance for your advice!

  • Enable DEVONthink’s Settings > OCR > Original Document: Move to Trash.
  • If you are using a smart rule, you would use OCR > Apply.

PS:

am I safe to delete the first file in Devonthink without it deleting the original on my Macbook?

This is a very unclear description.

Thank you! That’s very helpful.

Re the latter part: Will moving the non-OCR’ed copy to the trash also affect the file where it is stored locally on my laptop outside of DEVONthink?

The non-OCR’ed is the original. It then depends if you copied the original in DEVONthink or that this file is accessed as an index. If you copied, no sweat. If you are using an index, you would remove the original.

Note that originally this file is moved into the Trash of DEVONthink and this will not have an immediate effect on the original. Only when you empty the Trash DEVONthink the original will also disappear.

Thank you so much! I dragged them in from my files rather than indexed them hoping that this would be the case!

You’re welcome. Note that you can see in DEVONthink if it is indexed or not.

From the manual:

Note the icon that indicates indexed file.

Importing always copies into your database, leaving the item in the Finder untouched. Since it’s a copy, changes to the document in DEVONthink have no relationship or effect on the Finder’s copy.
