Removing a license

I just got a new MacBook. I started to activate my DEVONthink license on it and got the message “No more free seats for this license. Please remove the license from another device or purchase more seats. Then try again.”

I have my old device but I have no idea how to remove the license from it. Would just deleting DEVONthink from that other MacBook do the trick or must I do something else? TIA

In the menu bar, go to DEVONthink 3 > License… and choose “Remove”. (You access your license information the same way in most applications.) If you no longer have access to your old computer, you can also do it from your customer account at devontechnologies.com

You’re welcome!

I bought and installed the beta a few days ago and purchased a new MacBook Air today. I find now that I can’t remove the seat at your website for my previous Mac that I traded in. Apparently there is a rule that I can’t remove a seat installed within 5 days ago. Now I won’t have DT when on a trip for the next couple of days. You make the process sound simple, but I’m experiencing significant friction when dealing with your licensing methods.

This seems to be an individual issue. Instead of the forums I’d recommend to consult the support directly and open a ticket.

I’m not sure why this is directed at me. I have no affiliation with DEVONtechnologies, I’m just a fellow user trying to be helpful.

I’ve migrated seats a couple of times, but I’ve never run into that limitation, so I wasn’t aware. I don’t know if the reason is technical or if it’s a measure to prevent abuse—but I do have a sense that this is not unique to DEVONtech at all.

The folks at DT are generally quite reasonable. I would contact support/sales and explain the situation in a friendly manner. Hopefully you can figure something out.

Yes, a ticket has been created. An automated response says someone will get back to me.

I’m sorry to have bothered you with this. I have contacted support.

DEVONthink support resolved the issue almost instantly. I’m sorry I panicked.
