I tried creating a Template from what I thought is the simplest .rtf file. Originally when I created an .rtf file, it came by default with tab stops. I wanted to remove these tab stops and to have the document fit the width of the page the way it did in DT3. However, removing the tabs, adjusting the font size created a huge issue (or so it seems). Automatically, the .rtf files in which I use tables, now no long have tables.
Hence, my question: how do I restore my database from TimeMachine? I think I can use the backup from a couple of hours ago before this mess happened. But I can also use the latest backup from last night.
Many thanks in advance.
In this case, Time Machine makes it easy.
- Quit DEVONthink.
- Go the Finder folder where your database is located.
- Enter Time Machine.
- Step back in time, select the database file, and click the Restore button.
When you come back from Time Machine, double-click the database to open it.

Thank you! The database is in the process of being restored at the moment. I will start a separate conversation about the .rtf file settings.
Youâre welcome. Note it should be a very quick process.
It is turning out to be a very long process. When I opened the old database from Time Machine, I received a notification that more than 30 files were seriously damaged, and the database needs to be rebuilt. I proceeded with rebuilding it, and it is still going since late last night. If the progress bar is correct, this process will take more than two weeks. It is a large databases. Currently it is importing the database it copied after repairing it. I am attaching a screenshot.
Is my only option here to wait this out?
How exactly did you âopen the old database from TimeMCHINEâ? I would have expected you to say you restored the backup, and pick âkeep originalâ to create a new. Then open that new copy? How you describe what you did causes concern.
Why is your database that large? You have far exceeded the comfortable limits for a database, which should have a maximum of 250,000 items in it.
And how much RAM is on your Mac?
I am definitely not using the correct language because I do not remember the options I was given on the screen. I followed there steps:
- Quit DEVONthink.
- Go the Finder folder where your database is located.
- Enter Time Machine.
- Step back in time, select the database file, and click the Restore button.
Between Step 3 and 4, I had to choose the time from which I wanted the database to be restored. Then proceeded with Restore.
32GB RAM
After this is all over, I will have to find out how to separate my database into smaller databases. I do not like the idea of having separate databases that is why it grew so much. Plus recently I had to add a lot of data.
Well, 32GB is much better than many people have but thatâs still a very large database. Youâll just have to wait for the rebuild to be finished. Just donât let the machine power down while itâs working.
So the process finished much faster than I was expecting. Unfortunately, the various .rtf files had the same issue.
I thought that may be I did not go back far enough in time and redid the process, choosing to restore the latest database from May 7. At that time, I had not entered a template in DT4 of an .rtf file without any tab stops. However, when I opened that version, I see the same issue: tables are converted into text.
Do I need to change something in the settings in DT4?
When I switched from DT3 to DT4, I did not âtransferâ any settings. Should I create a ticket for this issue?
p.s. Just to add that within the same .rtf file, one table would be converted to text but other tables remain unaffected. Really odd.
