RTFs and TXT files: (1) Appearance , (2) Script to convert "dumb" quotes to "smart" quotes

Devonthink 4.1.1 here.

Two queries , the first about appearance , the second an executable script.

I. Appearance

My mac system is globally set in “Dark” mode. However, when working with RTF and TXT files on Devonthink, I’d like the Background color to be White, the Text color to Black.

In Settings > Editing > Format , I’ve accordingly changed my preferences, see screenshot:

However, you’ll see in the comparison of the next two screenshots that although the settings work on TXT files (Plain Text Document) , they do not for RTF (Rich Text Document).

Am I missing something?

II. Script

Can I create a script to add to my Devonthink’s Scripts Folder a script that, when executed on a particular TXT and RTF file, converts “dumb” quotes to “smart” quotes? If so, would someone kindly design such a script and share it here?

Thank you.

You shouldn’t change the background and text colors for this purpose, so I’d recommend you reset them. See the General > Appearance settings and disable Use dark background for documents.

Based on what you’re saying here, I’d say there is no need for such a script.

  1. Select the text file you want to affect and click into the view/edit pane to give it focus.
  2. Select Edit > Substitutions > Show Substitutions.
  3. Enable Smart Quotes and press either Replace All or Replace in Selection, as needed.

Also, enable the Editing > General _ Smart Quotes setting if you always want typographer’s quotes as you type.
