Run server option

Just a quick heads-up:

I have two seats for DEVONthink Pro 4. On one of my machines, I can run the Server via the Settings — I’ve tested it, and it works great.

I really like it, though I’m guessing it’s probably not quite what you want.

What do you think we want?
We’re happy if it’s working for you.
I’m curious why you didn’t define a user?

Did you purchase a Server license or just running the trial?

And is the machine using your license or just the trial?

As I bought/upgraded to DEVONthink Pro 4, not the server version. That’s why I’m telling you.

Did you activate the seat on that machine?

I have upgraded from the 3.n version. What I did was delete the 3.n version and dragged the new version from the .dmg to the /Applications folder. I did not specifically activate it. When I started the new version, it didn’t ask to do so.
I’m just a simple user of your application.

Server is unlocked for all users in the beta. Make the most of it while it’s free – it’s great, especially in the new DT4 version.

Are you sure? After stopping and restarting DEVONthink, the server option disappeared…

Unfortunately I’ve upgraded my Server licence now, so I can’t go back and test, but it was working for me in the beta before I licensed up. I mentioned this in an earlier thread and @BLUEFROG hit the like button rather than the you’re a blethering idiot button (mercifully disabled for regular users or I’d be top of the leaderboard), so I think it is the very generous case that the beta has the same feature set as trial versions with Pro and Server features unlocked (but without the trial version’s limitations on e.g. number of pages OCR’d). It does make sense, because you want users to test the hell out of this thing before it goes large, and most of the most ambitious new features are in Pro, while Server has had an absolutely massive overhaul.

Sorry, forgot to include the key part: when the Server option disappeared, did it disappear off the Settings entirely, or just refuse to Start/Stop? And is the behaviour the same on both your devices?

It’s possible that, as with the trial version, once you buy a licence it shuts down the features unavailable in the version you’ve licensed, though in those cases you can restore the lost functionality if you have trial time still unused by temporarily removing your licence. That may be the case with the beta as well.

That should be the case since the license dictates the features. However, that may be something @cgrunenberg could weigh in on.

A licensed version is of course limited to the features supported by the license. Even if Settings > Server is shown it’s impossible to start the server anymore.

Thanks for confirming! That makes perfect sense. As with the trial version, it means that it’s worth holding off actually entering your Standard or Pro licence while you still have access to the full feature set. It’s really worth taking Server for a spin while you have access to it; most people probably won’t have a long-term need for it, but it’s so impressive now that everyone should check it out while they can.
