In DEVONthink 3, I was able to save a PDF to DEVONthink using the Print Dialog box on the Mac. There was a drop-down menu that would appear and I could select DEVONthink 3, then click the Print button in that dialog and it would save the item as a PDF in DEVONthink 3’s Global Inbox. Since upgrading to DEVONthink 4, that doesn’t work. What changes do I need to make to get that shortcut working in DEVONthink 4?

I think I figured it out. I had to go into DEVONthink’s Install Add-Ons menu item and check the box for PDF Services. I then went into Safari to save a page as a PDF in DEVONthink, and then item I had add for Save PDF in DEVONthink (not DEVONthink 3) worked as expected.

Jim - I found your blog post on the DEVON tech website on setting this up in DEVONthink 3, and gave it some thought and finally decided I needed to look for some add-on in DEVONthink 4, and that solved the problem. I rely heavily on this print/save shortcut!

What app(s) are you using it in?
Mainly in Safari and PDF Expert. Which raises a different question: When I click on the Save as PDF to DEVONthink button or use the keyboard shortcut I’ve assigned to that function (command-D), the operation proceeds smoothly, but I get a very quick system message (too quick for me to read) mentioning access, Safari, and control, but the message goes by so quickly I can’t read it nor can I click on any buttons that might be needed to authorize the “action.” Any idea what that message is and how I can “fix” the problem (like I said, it goes by too quickly to read or click on any buttons).
It’s a macOS thing, not ours. The only thing you can do is keep your finger on the Return key, do the action that invokes the dialog and hit the key the moment the dialog appears.

Why aren’t you using our browser extension to clip to PDF?
and PDF Expert.
For what purpose?
I just did that, then tried again and the message DID NOT reappear. So that problem seems to be solved.
As to your other questions, I often do use the browser extension to clip to PDF. That’s especially helpful when I want to clip an article on a website but don’t want to include all the clutter. Sometimes the keyboard shortcuts – cmd-P followed by cmd-D – just seem quicker!
And after I thought some more, I realized I really don’t print a pdf from PDF Expert to DEVONthink very often. Usually I just drag the document into my Global Inbox.
I feel like you’re a Jedi master teaching me the ways of the Force! Lol!

Haha!
And indeed, in some cases printing to PDF in Safari can produce a better result.
