I want to save the webpage Th1rt3en (Eddie Flynn, #4) by Steve Cavanagh | Goodreads to a PDF. I have upgraded to DEVONthink 4.4 which – as I understand – promises to do better with web clipping. For the clipping I use Safari with the “Clip to DEVONthink” extension.
After loading the webpage I click the DEVONthink extension, choose “PDF (paginated)” and I get only the webloc file in DEVONthink.
This has happene quite often in older DEVONthink releases too but then I could at least convert this webloc in DEVONthink to a PDFand got via this detour what I needed. - But now the “Convert to PDF” just creates another webloc!
Please help.
(I attach an archive with the resulting webloc file.)
While greatly improved, there is still nothing we can guarantee about clipping any specific page. Also, it has been discussed many times over the years, if clipping runs into an issue, DEVONthink will clip at least a bookmark so something is preserved. And if this happens persistently, quit and relaunch DEVONthink first, the Mac second. So it’s not a bug nor unknown behavior.
PS: I clipped that URL to a paginated PDF on the first try.
Using the Clipper Extension with Safari 26.6.2 and DEVONthink 4.4 works fine here to PDF with or without “clutter free” on MacOS 26.6.2. Also works with “Sorter” and WebClip.
I understand about the ‘lack of a guarantee’. But I’m also experiencing significantly more issues than previously with trying to capture a webpage.
Specifically, no matter what I do I can get maybe one or two web pages to capture as pdf before DT starts to ‘default’ to capturing a ‘web internet location’.
Restarting the app consistently gives me at least 1 pdf. But then back it goes.
Obviously I’ve been unable to locate exactly what is happening to cause the change (otherwise I’d be telling you :-)) Any ideas - other than ‘restart when encountering issues’
I’ll jump in and share something I learned recently about VPNs on macOS. In particular, many of them don’t shut down cleanly and leave the networking packet filter engaged. For example, if I fire up NordVPN, do some surfing, close it down, then open mail and start browsing messages I will constantly get a bunch of errors about how my networking settings prevent message content from being loaded. The fix is to disengage the packet filter. Some commands helpful for this are:
sudo pfctl -s info # Shows you information
sudo pfctl -s Anchors # Lists the anchors in place to finger the culprit
sudo pfctl -d # Deletes them and fixes the problem
I use that last command all the time to clean up after VPNs, so if you’re finding problems persist with DT capture after using one, maybe you should use those commands to investigate and see if they help resolve the issue. Cheers!
