macOS provides a quite nice scanning function for photos and documents integrated in Finder an other applications using the iPhone (right-click in Finder -> Import from iPhone)
Unfortunately DT3 does not provide this functionality. Will it be implemented in the near future? Even under DTTG I have to use a thrid-party app to scan a document and share it afterwards with DTTG.
From my point of view this feature would be a great addition to both platforms and would optimize the workflow to import paper documents a lot!
Are there plans to implement sth. like this?
Are there ways to optimize this task using the current status of DT3/DTTG?
Right now, you can scan with the iOS “Notes” app to PDF and “send” that PDF to DEVONthink. There are a number of outstanding iOS apps available that do a great job of scanning. I’ve used Scanner Pro for years. Recommended.
Thanks @rmschne, I am aware of iOS “Notes” which is currently in use to keep track of some paper documents.
As a newbie to DTP I wanted to make sure that there is no other way regarding “Integrationkamera”. My workspace is very limited and does not provide space for a scanner which is the main reason to use the iPhone camera, despite the lesser quality and awkwardness of the process.
Yet, I still promote to incorporate the feature into DTP.
As I mentioned, and even slicker way to scan with iPhone, and I use it often “on the go” is Scanner Pro that I already mentioned. No need to photograph documents.
Re disk space for scanners … there are some small ones that don’t take up much space. I’ve used the Brother ADS-1700W for many years. Takes up small desk space.
Yes, it would be nice if document scanning built in to DEVONthink ToGo, but until that day comes there are some ways to accomplish that right now. Getting stuff done a priority for most of us, I hope.
With Finder, select a folder that you have indexed in a DEVONthink database. In the three-dot menu of Finder, use one of these commands to scan a document using your iPhone, which will (once saved) all at once be transferred to your desktop, stored in that folder, and indexed into DEVONthink. From there you can import the document and use it anywhere in the database.
Worked on my iPhone 14 with macOS 13.6.7. In Finder, I pointed to the DEVONthink Global Inbox as the target for the scan which then DEVONthink moved into itself, automagically.
Also true is that the subject of this thread is “Scan photo/ document with iPhone” so on that basis we’re an impasse.
I’ll throw in my 2 cents and say I use the app Quick Scan on my iPhone to collect scans of receipts and pages I gather throughout the day. I like it as a mezzanine app as it has good OCR as well as cropping and skew adjustments that I can do right when I scan and then chose to ignore or process right away.
When I do process the receipts, I have an iOS shortcut that asks me for some data (total, taxes, tip, categories, vendor etc), structures the data and adds it as text to the comments of the doc, renames it based on that data, and then adds the doc to DTTG. The comments are structured in such manner that I have a script in DevonThink that extracts that info to custom metadata when I am back at my laptop.
Thanks for asking. I will try to elaborate. Please excuse my english.
I am about to scan and manage documents from (german) authorities, like tax statements and so on. This has to be done for my wife’s documents on the one hand and for my own stuff on the other.
Some of the documents have to be kept as originals and my idea is to (automatically) assign an increasing number to them, put them in a box and forget about them. Other documents may be shredded after they have been successfully scanned.
This was indeed a very helpful hint, although I had to ctrl-click in the folder to have an activated “Import from iPhone or iPad”-Menu. Selecting the folder and clicking the three-dot menu gives me a grayed-out sub menu. Running Sonoma 14.5.
Nevertheless I imagine to go this route, because it saves me from buying a scanner or DTTG or flood my notes app with notes that I only create to scan and delete them anyway afterwards.
I would hope you’re not immediately shredding them post-scan.
And back to your question: There is no integration with that mechanism inside a DEVONthink database, so no you can’t use that function to scan into DEVONthink with your phone. @korm’s suggestion is a valid one and what I would recommend.
That being said, a proper scanner is advocated and they’re not all large. I have a ScanSnap iX100 that’s very small and wireless.
I’d be careful about that. „Ersetzendes Scannen“ is not something that can be done in an environment like yours. If someone eventually wants to see the original document (eg a Spendenquittung), you might get into trouble.
